That beat to hell $1100 Red sold. Feedback left on both parts. So a real sale.

I noticed this as well. I didn’t think ebay allowed an auction to end early with bidding? I assume the seller has to pay the fee?

They would only pay the final value fee if they elected to "end item early and sell to highest bidder". That is obviously not the case here. If you just shut down the auction, you pay no fees. Sellers have the ability to end any auction at any time prior to the final 12 hours.

Even though he now risks "ending up" like King Felix Hernandez in Seattle (loyalty unrewarded with no playoffs, no World Series games) I guess staying an Angel for life is good for Trout rookie cards because there will be no uniform discrepancy, ever. He must know something about that team's plans for the future that we don't know.

What if they offered him more money and he took a "paycut" under the condition that the other money goes towards pitching?

That's what Tom Brady did. Helps that his wife is super rich and rumors say he got part of the team

Rumor also has it that Brady is set for life as owner of the greatest Tom Brady football card collection of all-time (it's the GOAT) and that with nothing but a pen (and his hand) he can double, triple and even quadruple the value of any item, any time. Amazing.

That isn't 100% true. If you end it early by cancelling all the bids and not selling it to the highest bidder they can charge you a final value fee of whatever the highest bid was at.

From their website:

"You can end your auction listing early if:

There are no bids on your item yet
There are bids on your item, and you're willing to sell your item to the current highest bidder
There are bids on your item and you don't want to sell it to the highest bidder, but there are 12 or more hours left in the listing. In this situation, you'll need to cancel all active bids before you can end your listing. We charge a fee for ending a listing in this way."

That must be new (and I would like a better explanation of exactly what "fees" they feel entitled to collect when there is no sale).

Here's a better explanation:

https://www.ebay.ie/pages/help/sell/end_early.html

My understanding has always been that there is no fee as long as you go with "there was an error in the listing", or some such other "acceptable reason" for ending the auction early. IMO they would have to be pretty damn certain that it was fee avoidance (i.e., have messages through eBay asking to sell direct) in order for them to charge FVF on a listing that was ended with all bids canceled.

You agree to all this stuff when you register which they would probably point out if someone ended early and got charged a FVF and complained. Sellers expect the buyers to come thru and pay for the items, so sellers should be held accountable too. You list something and it has bids, it should be sold or pay a fee to avoid sellers from doing it all the time. If I was ebay and it was error in listing, I'd charge a fee for sure, that's a mistake that was avoidable. Broken I could see someone getting upset about, but like a car accident, you usually lose more then just the car value. That's my thoughts on it anyways.

Let's be clear about one very important thing here: eBay doesn't care about shilling. They don't care about counterfeits. They don't care about "fraud" (because that's the main argument for not selling outside of eBay, right...? eBay is the only "safe" selling place on the internet...?). The one and ONLY thing they care about is getting paid. So...counterfeits are fine as long as they get their cut. Shilling is encouraged because it results in higher fees for them. Advertising your business in any way at all is strictly VERBOTEN because that leads to sales that generate no revenue for eBay. So...eBay can be a sales channel for your business as long as you don't make any mention of the fact that your business largely exists outside of eBay. Everything eBay does is 100% self-serving. They do not care about the sellers. They care only about their margin.

All of this being said, they also need to allow for "human error". So...you can't just collect max fees on every "potential" transaction unless you have proof that the transaction was actually completed. Otherwise you are opening the door to a potentially enormous class action lawsuit.

I agree with all that for the most part. Ebay is a business and the goal of a business is to make money so of course they are going to make rules like the above to help them make money. I will say if the seller ends the auction for error in listing AND then doesn't relist the item corrected, that's enough proof for me to think there was a sale elsewhere. I just read on their community boards that apparently they allow 1 "human error" per year without charging you the fee. So I guess they do allow human error, but just once. I'm also sure they let big sellers go a little further. Like probstein or pwcc who already have deals with final value fees with them.

Default **The Perennial MIKE TROUT Thread**

Do you guys see potential upside for the 2011 Bowman Chrome #101 Refractor cards? The true gems are selling for around $450.

Rather than start a new thread, a bgs card with sub grades of 10,9.5,9.5,8.5 in a bgs 9 silver label is that correct? It is a trout card so figured it was relevant to be in this thread.

It still would have been nice to see where it ended up at, or if it was bought outside of ebay what the final price was. Just a reference for where this card sets in the collector world.

Guess the min would be 15000

Oh, I totally agree.

IMO, there is absolutely no reason to end the auction to sell for anything less than 18 (and more likely 20+). It was at 15 with days left, and 340 watchers. Nothing but upside. Granted, there was now a hard ceiling of 25k thanks to the newly listed BIN/obo PSA 10...but it was likely never getting there anyway. Any potential offer to end the listing early would have to be substantially greater than where he was already sitting.
