Default Lebron 03-04 Topps Chrome PSA vs. BGS

I have a PSA 9 2003-04 Topps Chrome Lebron James card and I was thinking upgrading to a BGS 9 or PSA 10. In looking at prior Ebay sales, I was really surprised to see the price variance.

Recent PSA 9's have sold for around $800. BGS 9.5's are more than double that, coming in just below $2000. And PSA 10's have been in the high $2000's to mid $3000's.

What's the reason for the spread? Seems out of whack compared to other cards. And what do you think the best value is for a long term hold?

BGS 9.5 is more than PSA 9 because they’re different grades

Wish I had pulled the trigger when PSA 10s were closer to $1k last year. Wasn't expecting this kind of jump. So arbitrary.

Right, but is the grade difference worth 2x in price?

That is the game being played. That is why you see so many altered cards show up in the BODA threads. Take a 9, trim a little off and it is a 10 and profit. I would keep the 9 rather than chase after what are probably altered cards.

I currently own one PSA 9 that I bought two years ago for 100.00....wouldn't mind owning a higher grade, but I too am staying pat with it....I never liked Lebron but thought I needed one for my collection....now that I see what they're selling for, I wish I had bought a few more.

Have we seen a trimmed LeBron Chrome? I don't recall seeing much of anything of the Chrome variety.

plenty of trimmed base RCs, of all varieties. as long as there is money to be made, the "bad actors" are all over it

Upgrading isn’t a bad idea, but prices are at all time highs and theres a big spread, as you mention. Nothing wrong with staying pat, as a PSA 9 is a great card. The most tolerable upgrade would be to a BGS 9.5 with 9.5, 9.5, 9.5, 9 sub grades as those will command a little less than 4 9.5’s or one with a 10 sub grade. However, even those are above $1,500 now. I was fortunate enough to purchase one maybe 5 years ago for a fraction of that - which i thought was a lot at the time.

All the time. Had to advise someone to not buy this short (T/B) Breaker's Rowe copy last week.

I wonder how PWCC is doing stopping those bad apples from submitting trimmed cards. Doesn't seem like much has changed in the last few months.

Sorry to sound noob but I am a noob to this scene. How exactly do they trim/trick the grading company?

Crazy how quickly they are climbing. My BGS has 3 9.5 and a 10 for surface. Didn’t expect to see that in the 2k range for value.

You're implying the grading companies care and check.

They dont.
