Default so PSA is closed...is BGS next? To submit or not submit

I can't wrap my head around this. My best guess is they'll be open at least another week or two unless things go suddenly sideways in Texas. Nothing on their website about closing temporarily. Are fewer cards going to be submitted due to budgetary issues? More cards submitted due to time/boredom? I really don't know.

In all honesty I have literally dozens of cards I need graded but obviously can't afford that. I have pulled the 10 I want graded most and probably wouldn't even send all 10 of those in, but I am tempted to send a handful. Thoughts and opinions welcomed

PSA is closed.

I would not risk sending off anything to BGS unless you are willing to potentially wait months to get it back.

So they are just defying the government order?

What jobs are considered “essential”?

Besides the staffing of the businesses allowed to remain open, the order specifies activities needed “to maintain continuity of operation of the federal critical infrastructure sectors, critical government services, schools, childcare, and construction, including housing construction.”

PSA opened back up yesterday. Talked to BGS today and they said they have no plan to close and it hasn’t even been a topic discussed.

Guys, PSA is closed again until 3/31. This was a change just a bit ago.

Texas has only mandated closing of bars, restaurants (drive-thru or pick-up only), gyms and schools for two weeks. Until further notice I wouldnt worry about other state restrictions.

More details here.

I know CGC (Comics Grading) has been slowed. I saw that a Gamestop store tried to stay opened because the manager said it was essential for living

MARCH 20, 2020 UPDATE

Pursuant to Executive Order N-33-20, issued on March 19, 2020 by the Governor of California, Collectors Universe’s Orange County office has closed until further notice.

As a result, Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) and Professional Sports Authenticator (PSA) have temporarily ceased operations, effective immediately.

It is evident to all that we are in uncharted territory. For now, the larger public good mandates this closure. We will share our reopen date once it is established by the state of California.

Thank you for your patience and understanding, and please stay healthy.

Sincerely

PSA likely closed until April 19th.

Based on?
There was no end date on the order. Restrictions will be in place “until further notice,” it said.

Wondering if this impacts graded PSA card values right now? Meaning yes, most prices are slowly dropping on players across the board, but if nobody can reliably get new PSA cards even looked at for any service level, shouldn't current PSA slabbed cards hold steadier? Not sure what happens with Raw card values, but if I were a buyer, I would look to assemble as many PSA 9s and 10s as I could to skip hassle of sending in to them anything raw.

All non-essential business in California is halted until April 19th. Until further notice is because it'll likely go on longer than the 19th and they don't want to give a time yet. We're just getting into this thing, buckle up.

This is a good series of questions. There is certainly a subset of high-end collectors who want only PSA-graded cards. There are not a lot of 2019-20 Optic and Select cards graded yet by PSA. I think the few that were graded—especially the PSA 10s and even more especially LeBrons and Zions—will get an increased premium over BGS cards in the same grade in the short term.

Right it's almost as if anyone who got PSA grades on recent cards got them in under a cut off date. Now, it will be impossible for anyone to get any new PSA grades for months. Ja and Zion Optic PSA 10 could carry a temporary premium, and he's not like there will be any further Trae and Luka for a while. Maybe that leads to a market correction and the prices go back up at some point on some of the latest product releases and young stars. But not sure if the general buyer will pick up that these PSA 9s and 10s are the last batch for months or if they should carry any implied extra value.

Make sure to use a pen and write on the back of your cards. Won't even lower the grade

I think you'd have to be crazy to send something to BGS right now. Sure they may be open today, but everything is so fluid it could change in a day. MAYBE an ultra quick turnaround you get your items back, but do you really want to risk that? In a market that's getting increasingly depressed, I'm not sure you will get maximum value for your item anyway. Question is, would you rather have the cards at home or sitting for an indefinite amount of time with BGS?

I sent cards in to PSA a few weeks back and the delivery was shown on USPS< but of course it takes PSA weeks to process just to keep the clock from running. I don't know where those cards sit at this point, and as far as I know, could be lost forever.

It's currently a month wait to start the process once PSA receives the cards.
