Default What cards do you buy AFTER selling your cards that went up in price?

would like to have a nice honest discussion on this, given current market/climate.
Everything is UP and UP, as had been discussed in many threads, whether it s singles, wax/box prices, "iconic" cards or RC, and now across many sports (including Soccer)

for examples;
- you own a psa 8 MJ Fleer Rc that you bought $1700 years ago, and now worth, say $5000-6000? You want to upgrade to PSA 9 or BGS 9, well those also have gone up from $3000 to now $9000-11,000?
what do you do? your "gain" will be lost in buying cards that you could have bought much cheaper few years back.

- you own a PSA 10 Lebron Chrome RC, now up say X times, you sell it and want to upgrade to the refractor version.
Well, it is also up almost X times, so now it s more unaffordable for you

- you own 1996 finest basketball box, now up X times, you sell it and want to buy 1996 Flair showcase box, now also up X times.

you get the idea....

Depends, there's many different scenarios.

For the collector, you could upgrade to the same card but higher grade like you mentioned. Or you could look to consolidate your sales into something you feel is safer. That could be a higher grade of the same card as previously mentioned. Or maybe you sold some stuff that you didn't really care about and now bought that 1 card you always wanted.

If you're the investor type, then maybe now you look for another low buying opportunity. You're searching for the next great investment.

Option C, cash out and walk away.

as a collector, your "gain" here seems to not matter if you re looking to upgrade
I guess you can see it like real estate:
if you sold your home 1000 sq ft (bought $100k) for $200k and now you want to purchase a bigger house 2000 sq ft, it will cost you $400k (was $200k years ago)
so your "profit"/"value gain" of $100k basically meant nothing, now that you bought the $400k

Consolidating the profits of multiple lesser cards for a big purchase is always a good decision, even it's the same player you're both selling & buying.

I'm a collecting minimalist, so I prefer quality over quantity but there's nothing wrong with playing the investing game with Prizm or Optic: just know you'll inevitably get caught holding the hot potato from time to time.

Are you selling because you think the market is overvalued or what? If you feel everything is overvalued i'd sell and buy nothing. Wait for it to correct then buy back in. You don't need to have cards. You do need to have a place to live so the real estate comparison is a bit different.

If you're selling because you have to much money in cards I don't see how upgrading would fit.

If you're selling because you want to put that money in to nicer cards than i'd just do it and not worry about the market. Maybe its way to high now or maybe it was way to low before. No one really knows.

The gains are certainly real considering cards as an "investment" have out performed just about everything else over the past couple years. Its really about personal preference.

For me i'm selling some of the less rare items I have that have pumped in order to pick up some rarer items that haven't appreciated as much. I'm also likely to take some money out of the hobby as my collection has appreciated in value to an amount i'm not entirely comfortable with. Really all about whatever your goals are.

in 20+ years collecting (on and off), today's price is truly unprecedented.
I don't think even the brightest "investors" in our hobby predicted this going back 5-10 years ago.

very good point.
the real estate is just to illustrate the value gain picture. not apple to apple obviously.

I might choose to do what you did, taking some money out and spend the rest on other cards

It depends on which cards. There are many cards I consider overpriced so I sell, but there are still many good buys to be had.
If 90% of people are chasing the same cards and you combine that with many new entrants into the hobby with deep wallets, certain cards reach exorbitant price tags, but it’s not every card.

Selling serial #’d superstars numbered to 50 or 99 that are 10-20 years old and buying current issued superstars numbered to 5, 10, or 25.

I’m selling all non-rookies right now. I’m your basic rookie only collector so parting with them isn’t hard.

I’m not really searching for the premium stuff right now (Prizm and optic) unless something pops up in my watch list. There is plenty of value out there in the off brands that are far more rare than the popular stuff.

I've been buying stuff that hasn't spiked. Impossible to find any good basketball options lately so been buying a lot of baseball and some hockey. Also picked up a bunch of 2019 Topps baseball wax at MSRP.

Cash. Been building some Warriors rainbows for fun, but even #’d of our crappy rookies are expensive because of this market

If I would have had a bunch of Jordan base cards laying around or Ja morant (or other hot rookie) prizms I would've sold them to buy cards that are actually for my PC.
