Default Kylian Mbappe

How would you rank his existing base cards in terms of long term value? I bought my first Mbappe card tonight but it was just a Donruss Optic. I see a lot of different cards out there but I find it harder to rank them than in other sports due to the soccer card market sort of just heating up. Obviously I know Prizm is king but where do Topps Chrome, Donruss, Donruss Optic, Select etc come in relation to each other? Also how would you view the 2 different cards in Donruss/Donruss Optic, the PSG and the France uniforms?

1. 17-18 Topps Chrome
2. 18 Prizm WC
3. 17-18 Select
4. 16 Panini Foot Sticker

For me personally it's gotta be the TOPPS sticker from 2017 or the Adrenyln Cards from that same year. It's the only product with him in his rookie Jersey, as I remember him as a rookie.

Most in the hobby would say it's the World Cup Prizm or WC sticker.

Everyone in this sub will praise the Topps Chrome. And say that's the one.

So it's really up to you because all of the cards have appreciated since soccer restarted. So you really couldn't go wrong.

None of the cards have an RC stamp or distinction, so it's really up to you.
If he is someone everyone will want to buy at a Messi level a decade from now, there's no telling which card exactly will be considered his true rookie, so go with what you like.
Case in point being Messi's very own rookie, To this day its debated.

So do you think there's no long term value in the 2018 Donruss/Donruss Optic? Was thinking maybe the Optic France card could because it's from the WC year but I know literally nothing about soccer cards

Long term there could be value in anything. MESSI 2nd year Mundicromo cards go for a pretty penny, the same for his 2nd year Megacracks. So really any card can have value. So go with your gut.

Look at the Jordan Metal Universe as example.
It's probably what has people going for the Mbappe "1st" chrome and prizm. Personally I prefer chrome as a design overall but that just shows my age

So, just assume you would get cherry-picked packs if you bought individually. Is a sealed box the way to go on these if wanted to buy in unopened format?

I would only trust sealed boxes. When you see loose packs it's usually because somone has hit the Mbappe and is selling whats left. The collation is pretty good but even with perfect collaction you only have a 85%-90% chance to hit one.

Thanks much, that's what I figured. I see someone claiming 2 Mbappe stickers per box (100 packs) on average. Guessing that's a bit of an aggressive claim.

That's aggresive, the checklist is 900+ but with so many players doubled up, and foils, crests and squads individual you get down to about a 550 checklist in total. With 500 stickers in a box and good collation 2 is pretty optimistic

This minus the sticker as I don't and never will consider a sticker a rookie card but a rookie sticker which shouldn't diminish the value as stickers are a very important part of this hobby and should be respected as such.

Yes, as said before...

1. Topps Chrome (Iconic, 17-18 designation, this will be the it card, no question)

2. Prizm (1st Prizm, only released every WC, I would buy a parallel personally as there is a lot of base out there)

3. Select (Also 17-18 designation, parallels are HOT)

*Optic are still worthy investments, but I would put them in a side category. Not true RCs, but it’s his 1st Optic and they are attractive cards. This set will only appreciate as well because it’s the first year of Optic. From all indications, this product line is only going to increase in popularity.

*The sticker is going to be popular within certain circles, like a cult following. I personally don’t want to buy one, but I’m also not going to pretend it won’t be worth money down the road.

Same question but for Jadon Sancho, does his Donruss/Optic get maybe more value given that it has rookie on the card?

i'm the oddball that's always been partial to the fathers day card b/c it has the rc logo. does it mean it's his rc? debatable, but the rc logo gives me the warm and fuzzies.

As much as I prefer the TC version of Mbappe and have many of both Prizm/TC at PSA it's interesting to note the PSA 10 Prizm base sells for $500 and the TC base sells for about $400 currently.

What is also interesting is there are only 72 PSA TC and 671 Prizm so the Prizm is outselling the TC yet there are 600 more copies of it. You would think it would be the opposite so it seems clesr the Prizm is preferred.

Not getting into parallels but from a base sales comparison thought that was of interest.

YES. His TC is still the go to, but Sancho’s optic stuff is still a GREAT investment. Especially given it’s the first optic set and has the Rated Rookie logo on it, big bonus there

It has less value than his TC stuff, but they have good value. You are probably a bit late to the party on the super rare stuff though.

You can still find bargain base optics and reds/silvers. His numbered optics btw and his gold /75 donruss are a thousand times better looking than his TC card, which is boring as F. End of the day, buy what appeals to you the most. There's plenty that would push a TC card even if it was a picture of a flaming poop, just because it's a TC, and people are snobs

Not so sure I would agree with that on Jadon just yet. No recent optic holo PSA 10s on Ebay to compare against a PSA 10 refractor but the base optic PSA 10 sells for as much as a base TC PSA 10 around $600.

It's another situation where you have a country kit and a team kit. I don't think you can go wrong with either but saying the TC is the superior card to collectors right now is a bit of a stretch imo. It might be slightly ahead of Donruss atm but the paper Donruss PSA 10 are even selling for 100s.

I think as people get more cards back from PSA this will all start to pan out though. I again have lots of both but do prefer the Donruss in this case as the Rated Rookie is just iconic and the England kit is a bonus to me anyway.

Knowing sports cards hobbies though TC usually will be the go to over Donruss but there are many variables here and for me the Donruss is the better card.

From a collectors standpoint, do you prefer the team kit or the national team kit when both are in the same set?

It depends.

Take Sancho's Donruss/Optic in 2018, I think it's pretty iconic already, it's a great looking card, but it just wouldn't look the same in a Dortmund kit.

It looks like the OP was changed, it now says to rank the base in terms of value. In that case (assuming all PSA 10):

Foot 16/17 (if it interests you, long term I can't see this ever not being the most valuable base)
-----
TC 17/18
Prizm 18 (I really don't like it as a rookie card per se, it's too late for that and in an international kit but carries a ton of extra value as a first Prizm from the World Cup he helped his team win)
------
select 17/18
------
Topps 17/18 sticker (I don't even know how this became a thing as it's completely redundant, people who include stickers would go for the earlier Foot, for others 17/18 has plenty of cards to pick from)

There are two money flows with Mbappe. The base market still has a lot of rookie collectors who tend to be meticulous and don't mind stickers, which is why valuewise it's still going for multiples of the Prizm / TC base and that constant bid will always be there. The high end money flow is after the best card possible, and that's the colour and low numbers, so the Foot is a complete non-factor in that discussion.

With Sancho TC is the more established brand, Donruss doesn't carry a lot of weight outside the US whereas Topps does. One thing I will say is that the Optic Holo's have awful centering and the colour has dinged corner issues so the PSA 10's will carry a premium. I wouldn't be surprised if they hold the same value as TC refractors because of that.
