I also thought Lebron was all hype when he was in high school. Only good in comparison to his weak teenage competition.

Now one of my all-time favorites athletes.

Conversely I thought Kenyon Martin was a potential legend of the hardcourt around the time.

I don't think I've had that many terrible ones, just bad ones:

- I thought OPJ and Cody Zeller were gonna be All-Stars
- I thought Giannis peaked in his 4th year

The only ongoing one that I think might get me down the line is that I think Jaylen Brown is overrated and will make 1 or 2 All-Star games tops and Tatum will peak as a Top 10 player, maybe 1st Team for a year or two.

There's literally no stats that support this, other than a couple of percentage points from the free throw line.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Wade fan but Lebron he is not.

While Lebron is easily better, I will say that Wade got everything he could out of his body. That dude was on the floor after every shot it seemed.
If any of us had Lebron's body, we would all be in the NBA, no matter how low our NBA IQ was. We might not be nearly as good, but still make it.
Many guys have the size and build of Wade and never even come close to making it.

I thought Shaq was going to be an all-time great with a wide multimedia presence, commercials, shoe deals, rap albums, movie roles, and eventually a sports jockey job. So I loaded up on his rookie cards. I was half right.

I did not think that Gordon Hayward was going to be good.
He was not only weak coming out of college, but looked robotic and not very athletic.
I am glad to be wrong on picks like these.

Same.

I also thought Brian Roberts would break out in his late 20s for some reason.

He’s 6’4’ and 220

What on earth are you talking about?

I put Shaq and Randy Moss in the same boat. They are both all time greats, but I felt should of been just slightly better and considered one of the top 3-5 of all time if they would have practiced and tried a little harder.

Yeah, every high school team has at least 1 guy this size, so my point still holds true.

And Gronk is the same size as LeBron and would be a terrible basketball player...

You are dropping some serious hot takes.

It’s entertaining at least

I thought Austin Rivers was going to be really good in the league. Liked how he could get his own shot and attacked the rim. Forgot the fact that he couldn’t shoot! Woops.

Gronk could never move like Lebron with that size though

You literally just said, literally, that anyone the size of LeBron would be in the NBA

Literally

Did I mention that yet?

Believe me, that Cody is a terrible take for sure.

I meant his same body, not just someone that has the same height and weight.
Even though Gronk has the same height and weight, he is not built like Lebron at all.

I feel like he and Thon birthed the youtube mixtape hype era. I fell for it a bit myself with Austin. Those high school dunk compilations made him seem like a mix between Lowry and MJ. Basically HOF.

Jimmer Fredette was going to be the greatest 3 point shooter ever and Mudiay was going to be the next D-Rose

I know wrong sport, but its an all time bad take. I was all in for the Colts to take Ryan Leaf over Peyton Manning. Then I doubled down the next year, wanting Ricky Williams over Edgerrin James. Very happy to have been wrong. I’m sure I’ve had some wants for the Pacers but they drafted so poorly for so long I sort of gave up on having an NBA draft opinion. That and the Pacers never have a top 5 pick to drool over for weeks/months. Excited for GOATga now though. 15 years to live up to his name!

One of my biggest hobby regrets came in 2003. I decided Lebron was overrated and basketball was getting too expensive and focused my spending on baseball. As a Marlins fan I loved Josh Beckett and went all in on his cards. I can only imagine how many Lebron’s I could have gotten for the same price back then.

OUCH. My best stock purchases have been at all time highs (appl baba V etc.) but it's hard to apply that logic to cards.
