There are some jobs that are not, and should not be, designed to pay a liveable wage. A fry cook at Mcdonald's is a job that anyone can do. You should be compensated for your level of skill at said job, not making a "living" off it.

I worked about 30 hours a week at Blockbuster Video for 4.25 an hour when I was 18. Should I have made $15 an hour to do that? No. Want to know why? Because I was a nobody. I wasn't in management, I wasn't a supervisor, I was just an underling who rented overpriced VHS and DVD's to people. The turnover at this position is tremendous for a good reason. That's because the job itself isn't designed to be a lifetime position to raise a family on.

If you aren't making enough money to live on, go get another job. It's really not that difficult. Despite what the bleeding hearts may make you believe.

I firmly believe that if you work 40 hours a week at the very least you should be able to live at least somewhat comfortably but that often isn’t the case in this country. I also believe that having a large chunk of the country one emergency away from a financial disaster isn’t sustainable.

Also, struggle with little hope of significantly improving your situation doesn’t build character...it builds resentment and hopelessness.
Then find a way to move up. Get creative with your spending. If you choose to work 60 hrs a week stocking Walmart shelves, that’s on you. Supply and demand. You are easily replaceable and as such earn a minimal income if that’s the job you settle for. I’ve have low income before, but realized my worth at the time, and never thought anyone owed me more just because I spent X number of hours on the clock.

Develop more skills. Find ways to make yourself more attractive to companies. I’m not here to spoon feed anyone the answers. The fact that our kids aren’t dying from dysentery and I can turn a dial to set the temperate in my home is incredible. The rest is gravy. You can keep crying and blaming everyone else for why your music degree hasn’t earned you a baller lifestyle, but I see a guy who puts more effort into feeling sorry for himself than he does trying to find solutions to improve his own outcomes in life.

When his truck broke down, he didn't take it to a shop. He googled how to fix it himself. When he needed dental work, he went across the border (to Mexico) and got it done super cheap. He simply found cheaper ways to live. He went without many things. He sacrificed.

I was impressed. Here was a single father in his mid-thirties with no education and a young daughter, and he was getting it done.

Exactly. My wife and I bought a house that needed a lot of work. I’ve lost track of all the time and money I put into it. I learned tiling, finish plumbing, trim, electrical work, fixed my own condenser when it broke, etc etc. All from the internet. But I have a solution oriented mindset and believe I can do anything. Some people are more inclined to feel sorry for themselves and tap out easy.

Who said "screw those people"? A person can stay alive on minimum wage. A three bedroom house and an SUV aren't guaranteed rights.

How about this: when you get that paycheck, don't blow it over the weekend. Grind and make sacrifices for a year. Wow, now you can get a nicer apartment. Do it for another year while showing up for work every day. Maybe now you get a dollar-per-hour bump. That's an extra $2,000 in a year. Save a little more. One day you're an assistant manager, because you've been a loyal, hard-working employee.

I'll sit back and listen to why this is so ridiculous and why I should just send my money to them instead.
Again, the complete disconnect. In most places you can’t I’ve on minimum wage.

Hey all, just pull yourself up by your bootstraps! If you are living paycheck to paycheck you are a lazy piece of dirt!

Incentivise products made in the US. Make it worth their while for companies to move production back here. Tax the hell out of Chinese and some other foreign made goods.

On the ladder from lower class to upper middle class, we kicked out a rung with our China policy. And here we are on the cusp of electing a bag man for China. Amazing. Talk about voting against your best interests.

Why would I choose to "go for it" when I earned two degrees and have a career that will pay me more than that?

Not the tough guy approach, but it is incredibly insulting to someone to tell them just to try harder and their issues will be fixed, then tell them if they can’t live on minimum wage they are just irresponsible.

But in any case.

1100 a month cleared.

550 for rent.
100-150 for utilities.
100 for a transit pass here, and you better hope you have access because our public transit sucks.
50 dollars for maybe a burner phone
70 dollars for internet, as I consider that a need if you want to find better employment.

That means you are spending 850-900 on just that listed above. Good luck on living on 200 for everything else you need!

Because you are insulting people that say it is a struggle. Put your money where your mouth is then. See how doable it is instead of demeaning people that do struggle with that exact situation.

I'd argue that's the worst thing you can do for people living on minimal wage. They will be paying way more for essentials than they did before. Just cause you can handle the price increase of essentials doesn't mean that the majority of low income workers can.

Are there accusations of a liberal bias? Not even Blowout is safe from the leftist media!!!

Honestly though, just browsing through, it does feel like there are a lot more posters that lean right, but I could be wrong. I don't read every post and only come check this thread out once every few days or so.

Those are the people that will be helped the most. They will have higher paying jobs to move in to. That is the rung that was kicked out. Moving production overseas has been devastating.
