Maybe that's an outlier and I know the hobby isn't ALWAYS about making money, but there still needs to be some value.
Somebody left big money on the table on that $200 Ichiro auto. His autos never sell that low. You can see it was a "buy it now" new listing that went fast.

Just picked up one at the NYC MLB store. Cards are really nice in hand. Could have done better on the auto (but could have done worse as well). Obviously very happy with the refractor - blue /75.

Can't figure out their pricing. When they opened they had stadium club hobby boxes at $80, well below where you could find any online. Then they get topps update and its like $90-100, which was more expensive than most places. Now they have chrome black $25 below topps site??

Not feeling it. Easy pass. Too many competing products. Collect everything and you end up with nothing. Besides, until Topps starts eating some of these overpriced products, they're just going to keep making more.

It's good to see them price product on their website at a level that reduces/eliminates the potential gain from an immediate flip.
Now this is a reason for buying that I've never heard, probably because it's terrible.

Picked up a Robert refractor for $200. Based on what I've seen these cards look beautiful. Base PR is about 1/4th of Sapphire and overall better design elements make this a nice product especially in that $125-150 range.

Terrible is what Panini is doing to customers.

Would you pay 500% over SRP direct from company on anything else in life?

Would you feel better if they said the SRP was $1,000,000 and then sold it for $150? The SRP from Panini is meaningless and has been.

Would anyone pay Nike $1200 for a pair of Jordan's or $1000 for a PS5 direct from Sony? That is basically what Panini is doing to it's customers.

Most certainly yes. If they're buying the same Nikes from you for $1200 why wouldn't they buy them from Nike for $1200?

Because the supply/demand would not dictate $1k PS5's and $1200 Jordan's long term.

The reason they resell for more is because availability. Case in point is this Topps release. The supply being much larger has significantly drove down the price on secondary market. If these sold out instantly you can bet the resale on Black Chrome would be hundreds more.

The issue is Panini has been giving the false perception that the product is limited when in fact it is not which is enabling them to drive up costs. The Prizm football release this year will prove that. They are straight up price gauging.

You changed the equation here. Product pricing is tricky and Topps doesn't seem to be getting the most revenue that they could be on some products. You price something too low and it sells out instantly and then there's a secondary market where people pay fair market value for it. Due to lower supply from the initial release it will likely sell for more than it would if they just priced it correctly to begin with. In that case the true fair market price is somewhere in between.

Panini is pricing things closer to fair market value and they are able to figure this out much better because they sell certain products using the Dutch auction.

In the case of Topps Chrome Black they seem to have overshot fair market value to some extent since it is still available. But if it eventually sells out which it will, either at this price or via some sale then they likely got as much as they could out of it.

In terms of Jordans and PS5s though, Sony and Nike likely could have afforded to price them out of the gate a little higher to gain more revenue and reduce the after market sales.

Terrible to you, sensible to me.

No need for Topps to price this @$75 (or whatever is "reasonable") just to preserve the value proposition for retail flippers.

We'll see how long it lasts on their site.

I was scratching my head at that one as well. Had to read it a few times over to see if it would maybe make more sense to me lol

Let me put it this way. I'd rather exclusive products actually be available to purchase on Topps site for a few days.

If that produces heartburn to those who can't see a path to immediate resale all the better.

I see... well, even though you don't want them, go buy more!! I'm sure Topps really appreciates your loyalty to their pricing strategy lol
