Default Hey idiot that’s a great pull.

How many times have you opened a product could be any sport or non sport where you pulled a card you should have been jumping for joy but didn’t realize how good the card you pulled was. My latest have been baseball and I will give a couple of my examples to start us off.
This one happened when I was trying to get a Jasson Dominguez out of bowman, I pulled a Bayron Lora Chrome 1st bowman speckle out of 299.

The next came from a bowman chrome megabox, I knew this one was good but not as good as my celebration should have been.

Luis Matos on Card orange refractor autograph numbered 01/25 might be my first 1,000 dollar card then again maybe not.

Let’s hear or see your pulls that you had no idea what you actually had.

I sure didn't think I'd get $2,500 for the Iron Man Robert Downey Jr autograph when I pulled it. I was hoping for the Jeff Bridges

Yep it’s things like that that amaze me, I am glad I actually take the time to find out what I have before I trade or sell it.

The Downey was unusual in that it got better and better over time, like a sports card of a well performing athlete, with each successful Marvel movie he was in being like another all-pro season. It also helped that he hasn't signed since. Imagine the value if Trout had only ever signed his rookie year.

I had this happen with a Supergirl Memorabilia card. I had pulled it when the product released, and as a fan of the show didn't look to sell. When I decided to check out thinning some of the mem cards to get autos, I looked up this dual and it was like a $900 card. I took that money and ran.

2012 UFC Bloodlines. I needed a few supplies and bought a few of the mini boxes as I was a casual fan of UFC. Pulled a Nick Diaz red auto but didn't think much of it. Went home and checked eBay and didn't see any of his autos listed so I put it up for $999 OBO for poops and giggles. Got an offer of $800 within minutes and accepted it on the spot. Got paid and the transaction went smoothly. Highly doubt you'd get anywhere near that today.

This is always nice to see, and I would prefer this to some of the online breakers who pull a card that goes for like 30 bucks and declare it the hit of the century. "This card sells for like 900 dollars".

I get what they are doing, but calm down buddy, let's let reality set back in.

That is true, you hear these online breakers go on about the value and then you check eBay and get reverse sticker shock. More often than not a card is not worth what you think it will be.

I pulled a Pat McAfee auto of last year's Obsidian #ed to 10. When I got home, I looked on eBay & saw they were hitting close to $300 at the time. Not a $1,000+ card or anything, but was surprised to see them going for that much.

Upper Deck had a Dr. Strange set. Some of the cards were 'strange change' cards that were like $10-15 cards at the time. Swore under my breath and put it to the side. Looked at it again a little bit later and realized it was an alternate strange change card, 1/1 with Stan Lee auto. Went from a $10 to $1000 card.

2012 Bowman. This was when I still collected baseball. Mind me because it's been years and I'm not familiar with the terminology. I broke a half a case of this stuff and hit an orange chrome auto of Oscar tavares and a red something or other non auto/non chrome of the same bloke. Apparently he was a somebody to hit at the time. Sadly, I think he passed away.

I collected Matt Moore at the time. Was bummed I didn't get anything nice of him.

I was waiting for UPS to arrive at my old LCS and opened a new 2015 Topps Wrestling box for the heck of it(looking for the Hulkster) and got a red 1/1 auto of AJ Lee and didn't know anything about modern wrestling, neither did the 60 year old shop owner. Put it on ebay and got around $900 I believe.

He was a top prospect, Alexis Lafreniere levels. Those two cards were worth a ton. Yes, he passed away tragically a few years ago.

Needchapmans can tell you all about him as he was deep into Tavares.

Oh, yeah, I'm like 95% less insufferable in non-political threads.

I thought of another one. In 2013, I bought a couple of Topps 2013 flagship baseball hobby boxes at the Frank & Sons warehouse show. I opened the first one and saw this laying atop the packs...

...and thought, "no big deal, this must be a contest paper found in every box".
When I opened the other box to find it didn't have one, too, I figured they messed up and left it out or maybe they were in every other box.

A week or two later, when I was sorting the cards, I took a look at the back of the contest paper and saw this:

(Yes, my actual one had the hologram sticker).

I definitely was curious about the bat, which all 10 ticket holders got, and as for the one-winner the Ultimate Chase Pass grand prize, I figured if the Padres, Angels, or Dodgers (my favorite team) made the playoffs, I could afford the travel to actually attend the home games, but the away games would be a stretch, so ultimately, I decided to sell it, figuring whoever bought it would probably have the means to travel to all the games.

The beauty of the offer was that you didn't have to select the team you'd follow if you won the drawing until the playoff teams were set, so the winner definitely got to attend at least one playoff game.

Obviously, a Boston fan could've really cleaned up with this if they won the drawing, as the Red Sox went all the way that year. Had I turned it in and won, the Dodgers had 10 postseason games, but only 5 at home, with the others being in Atlanta and St. Louis. The person I sold it to (for around $600) told me they were Giants fans, but SF was lousy that year. They likely would've selected the A's to follow, and Oakland did play 5 games (losing to Detroit). I remember reading about the eventual winners, not the person I sold my ticket to, and I remember it being a father and son who did select the Dodgers. I'm not sure how many of the 10 games they attended, but like all 10 ticketholders, they also got that multi-signed mystery bat.

I also wondered who Topps got to sign that. I was never able to find out.

2002 Topps Chrome football. Bought a box about 2 years ago looking for a Brady refractor.
Was pretty disappointed I didn't hit a Brady and in my black refractors. I got a Julius Peppers /199. Had no idea that was basically the 2nd best, if not the best, card in the set.
Ended up getting a 9 and selling it on ebay. Centering was really close but alas, no 10.

That’s awesome wonder who signed the bat also, I have a kick in the nuts story about a football redemption. Me and a coworker from my ambulance always bought football cards from this one Walmart close to our station in 2007 I went earlier in the day to buy some football but I had left my credit card home and didn’t have enough cash on me, another co worker said they would spot me the money and I said that’s okay I will just get it tomorrow. My coworker that was working the night shift that day came up to me the next morning and told me he pulled the golden ticket for the autographed rookie premiere helmet which has Adrian Peterson, Marshawn Lynch and a lot of other top picks, he also sold it for about 600 dollars on eBay whereas I would have kept it.

The guy who bought that if back when the product was new was like the Omar Vizquel buyer in baseball he would over pay for everything and didnt care. And then most subsequent cards sold for 25% i would work out deals for him for rare cards and he would paypal me $500 multiple times for finders fees on sub $500 cards. Really nice collector, unfortunately I heard he passed away a few years ago now.

2006 SPx Hockey. Pulled the SPx Impressions #87/99. Paid no attention to the number and it languished in my junk box for a month before I figured it out.

For an encore, I did the same thing with a 1/1 Emerald Crosby Autograph from ITG's Crosby product they did later that year. SMRT.

2011 Topps Tier one. Went to my LCS on release day and bought two boxes. Brought them with me to open up on a layover flight. I was half asleep when a pulled a redemption for a Albert Pujols, Matt Holiday and Stan Musial triple auto /10. I just saw it was a redemption and skimmed passed it. Didn't realize what I had pulled til the next day.
