But these players are a different breed. Their loyalties are more to themselves so they grab all this money, work less for it and call it the norm. It's the ultimate heist. Because, just wait, they are going to be so fresh for the playoffs lmao...

It's not just these players tho. It's a generation (and a culture). Out w/ the old and in w/ the new. It's not as if this is isolated to Kyrie and happened overnight; the NBA slowly shifted year after year giving more power to the employee and less to ownership. This is a feature of that shift, not a bug and how the NBA handles it will likely determine the next shift.

Assume the best case scenario for Kyrie; videos are old, he's back next game and just needed 5 games off to clear his head (this time). Should the / Will the NBA take any action? I'm of the opinion they have to; to prevent these 2 week in-season vacations for other players down the line but the dust has to settle first before we even know what "this" is.

I don’t think the NBA should play any role outside of punishing him for violating Covid protocols, if true. Levying punishment for going AWOL should be left to the Nets. If they decide not to do anything about it, so be it. But by doing so, they’ve set the standard. So when Joe Harris decides he needs a week vacation, he gets to have it.

Admittedly I tend to side with labor over ownership often times, but unless there is a deeper reason for the absence this kind of thing is ridiculous imo. An abuse of power/privilege, and have to imagine next labor agreement ownership will try and iron out these abuses. Right now teams are in difficult situations when it comes to managing their star players, punishing them risks alienating a player that has tons of power/leverage over the organization...

Well here in lies the issue. I don't think you can let the Nets set policy for the NBA.

Simply by nature, the Nets are less likely to institute consequence because it's their asset and they don't want it blowing up in their face. And if/when that happens, the NBA will concede all power for future vacations by setting the precedent on this one not to get involved.

Consider the time, not too long ago, where Pop started resting Tim and Tony toward the end of the season simply because. That spiraled to where we are today; stars regularly taking time off during the season simply because they can. (Popovich was logical in his decision, but the precedent was set for a much more broad use of the idea).

Same thing will happen here, if allowed. Players season stats will devolve from 82 to 65 so much more regularly (if not more). And to be honest, we're kind of already headed that way anyway so this may or may not speed it up.

Well again; this is by design. Turning this into a players league means players do have that power. We've got ourselves a bit of a sticky wicket here; but I believe no matter what decision is made, the NBA will focus on future governance with their actions, and care less (if at all) about punishing Kyrie.

I can see that. I just view this as a little different than resting players. Although it has the same end effect. Someone has to do something though.

Can you clarify on the future governance aspect? what changes would they be looking for?

I think ownership both benefits and gets hurt by the marketing of individual player over team. It's good for league branding/revenue, but they lose leverage over star players who can hold organizations over a barrel, at least with current way contracts are set up. I don't mind guaranteed contracts, but it's problematic that players can force trades when they are barely into the agreed upon deal. I don't really know best ideas for how to better balance things, but I do think it is a problem.

Do they?

Four months ago, the Milwaukee Bucks decided not to play an NBA post-season game. Just decided ya know what, nah. Game 5 of the NBA playoffs; just not gonna do it. What was the result?

Nothing. In fact, I'm pretty sure the NBA never actually made a statement about it. Just casually pushed the game to the next day and kept quiet. Perhaps this will be just like that; something that just comes and goes without any kind of consequence.

There is only one goal of the NBA; and it is to make money. To achieve this goal, a balance is required to ensure maximum profitability. A balance between corporate interests, team interests and labor interests. Whatever the league decides to do (if anything) about this Kyrie situation, the decision will be made that keeps the goal in tact; maximize profitability.

What the decision will not be about, is Kyrie Irving.

Gotcha.

I always think of it as finding the happy medium, there is enough money in the pot for everyone, trick is finding the right balance. But I wonder if money pot shrinks for the next tv deal, I have no clue. Ratings have been struggling, but I think delivering a product that skews younger demographic via cable is becoming more and more problematic.

yeah, they've reached a point where they make so much money they can give the middle finger to whoever, would love to see TV networks start dropping games from national television, the revenue pot shrinks, so will the overpaid athlete's contracts, would make them think twice about doing this dumb stuff. It's easy to be a jag when you can buy and sell your franchise. Way too much power and leverage are given to these entitled players now and they know it. its like letting the kids run the household..be a parent.

There is a large group of people who would take pleasure in this scenario.

NONE of them should be writing on this board. A healthy, revenue generating, popular NBA is good for every single card owner on this board (myself included). Political leanings aside; I'd hate to have a lot of money tied into a league that starts to fall apart.

So, I am hopeful for a swift and fair resolution!

trust me im thrilled cardwise, but they are running this league into the ground with this behavior. This isn't even me talking politics at this point, this is just insanity to let this behavior be okay. And as someone who also has plenty of card holdings i agree, but on the flip side, this league could easily turn into something bad if they just let players go off and do whatever they want and come back when they please...that would potentially be worse than networks pulling games. But like you said swift and fair resolution is what everyone wants, but if they do nothing its a slippery slope going forward..players will be like "well kyrie did..."

At some point it will fall apart....we're getting awfully close.

And just like that he is not expected to play tonight, Wednesday or Saturday for the same reason. Been a fan of the Nets for a while now and I wasn't happy when he signed because of what he did on the Celtics.

They? Whos they? Kyrie and Harden? How many other examples can you give us?

The top 15-20 talent players are the ones that are the most pampered and entitled. A couple of stars act out and theyre running the league into the ground?!

The NFL allows marijuana abusers, women and child beaters to play and you think some nutty player not playing “for personal reasons” is running the league into the ground.

Kyrie is bad version of Dennis Rodman. When Rodman was in Vegas or wherever back in the Bulls days, he came back and won. Will Kyrie? I don't think. Kyrie has a weak and strange character. The earth is flat. No more words to say about him.
