Ah so the world's first decentralized global digital currency that hasn't been hacked or double-spent in its 10+ years of its existence is imaginary and valueless but a mass-produced picture of a sports star on cardboard is.

Sounds about right!

The thing that confuses me is I understand Bitcoin has intrinsic value because there's processing power required to "mine" it.

A Ronald Acuna card mass produced by Topps requires no more investment than the million others they made of every other no name rookie that isn't worth the money it's printed on.

Sometimes I look at my cards and think, they're just mass produced pictures. They aren't autographed, they aren't rare, they aren't condition sensitive. Why is this Topps base card selling for $50? This card cost $0.0001 to make. What is the allure of owning a base card, where the entire value is tied to what picture is on it?

Then I have an existential crisis on why any sports cards that aren't exceedingly old, rare or autographed are valuable.

Definitely good points here.

My answer: many in the hobby like knowingly participating in a corrupt hobby marketplace.

If you agree with the above 3 posts, what are you doing here? Not trolling, asking honestly. It seems like you hate this hobby.

That's only if you collect junk like that.

When you go on ebay and don't see "your" card then...there's allure.

The answer is basically yes to all of these for some people.

Right. I see two different things driving the market.
Vintage in high grade/vibrant color - hard to find, significant eye appeal, history. I like these.

Rare patches, autographs, whatever, from past years which never show up. Something like the 05 Upper Deck Sweet Spot Classic patches. I like these. Visually appealing, limited number of cards made, limited alternatives, lots of buyers competing.

New Topps Update PSA 10 - 10K others in existence, every one looks the same, no value to produce, trades more like a stock that's tied to player performance.

Anybody who understands that the Fed has been printing money like there's no tomorrow in order to fund the stimulus and keep the economy from collapsing.

They've basically created $2 trillion dollars out of thin air, and will be creating another trillion or so when the new stimulus bill gets passed.

That creates inflation and a bubble in hard assets....

Econ 101, folks....

The moratorium was extended to September 2021. Extending the moratorium gave people a place to stay, but didn't solve the problem. And a $1400 Stimulus won't cover 12+ months of missed rent/mortgage payments. I'm sure there will be programs stacked on top of programs to try to help people out, but there will be no forgiveness for this money. It's due.
True....but meanwhile, the stock market is at all-time highs and the rich are getting richer....and they're the ones buying cards....

Well....according to this CNBC article, there are over 20 million millionaires just in the US alone....that's a lot of buying power.

https://www.cnbc.com/2021/02/09/more...redit%20Suisse.

So given the extent to which the Fed is printing money, this bubble may last until they start raising interest rates to head off inflation, which may not be until 2022 or 2023.

Some of this is starting to sound like Project 2020 in May.

"All it takes is one or two rich guys to decide that they love xyz prospect, and they can move the market 10x up"

"It's not about sports card collectors, this appeals to art mom who will buy these cards because they transcend traditional collecting interests"

Same tactics used to push GameStop to the moon. Same tactics used in our hobby for decades.

There are always a ton of hobby guys looking to create FOMO and increase the value of cards before they sell out. For many, it’s their formal jobs, some employed by hobby “institutions”.

There should be more than enough pricing data and analytics to prove bubbles and pricing trends...well, not on Worthpoint anymore as of this week - I wonder if the loss of Worthpoint’s extensive data is a coincidence...

This would be the best way to start separating people who will never contribute to the human race.

I don't buy into the concept of "xyz suddenly discovered baseball cards, and now wants to purchase every David Ortiz card made". It's more like, "xyz read an article by Gary Vee, who has a bunch of social media clout, and he said to buy all these new players because when they improve next season, you're going to see tremendous gains, and xyz didn't realize that baseball cards can be worth thousands of dollars now".

I'm not trying to be a jerk because I see that you own a business and presume (and hope) it's doing quite well. I just don't think that all purchases are equal in nature.

this is true. i have a pretty extensive david ortiz pc but i got into the hobby ten years ago although i really started pouring money in like 5 or 6 years ago. if i was entering the market today u can bet i would not be focused on my pre 2004 david ortiz collection i would be chasing a big payday off just new stuff. even now im caught up in the new stuff and put a lot of effort and money into it but if i was just coming into the market now every penny would be chasing a new card regardless of the player. i think thats true for most of us though but i might be wrong.

I've been collecting for 20 years, this market is absolutely bananas. So much so that I am selling a lot of my higher end BGS/PSA slabs for ridiculous prices. Normally I feel bad letting PC items go, but I am 100% certain I will be able to buy these cards back for way cheaper sooner or later.

I have a baseball question for this board, since I am mainly football/hockey. I have some 89 UD Griffey PSA 9s and raw cards. What the heck happened to that card? This is widely known to be so over produced and not PSA 9's are going for like $400 and raws for $100 or so? I just look at the PSA pop and there are 25k PSA 9s out there. 25k!! And that is just PSA. Is there something I am missing, or are people just simply ignoring all this data and buying up everything no matter what nowadays?

Can you give some examples of what you're selling or feel are ridiculous prices besides the '89 UD Griffey? I think it is a result of people being ignorant of pop reports but are there more than 25k Griffey collectors? Probably.

There is no shortage of Griffey cards, and all of the sudden people went “hey he was pretty good so let me pay $400 for a card I could get for $100 not long ago.” He has not retired, been inducted into the HOF, passed away.. in the last 18 months, so explain the reason for the price spikes? It was under $100 in April and you could buy all you wanted at that price, and now it is 4x that amount in less than 10 months.

Is it scarce -no. Can you buy tons of unopened still - yes. Do you think it will go up 3-4x from here if you buy it now at $400. That is the real question.
