I’m not familiar with soccer cards at all (with the trends). Is playing in the UEFA CL like competing in the NBA Playoffs? Do you expect a dip if PSG doesn’t win the UEFA CL?

When all options are available for a player, Chrome has been king for the last 25 years. When Chrome is not there, they fall on other options.

I appreciate that but this isn't basketball, each sport has its own nuances. The Panini heritage in football is very much like Topps in Baseball, 60 odd years of global heritage. Chrome is my favourite hobby release but it's striking how strong the prices low end domestic Panini releases still get (whether it's Megacracks, Mega Craques or stickers) even when in direct competition with more premium brands like chrome.

edit: personally if you have multiples of one brand I would absolutely think about diversifying a little into the others a bit. At current prices it's not a bad spot to turn excessive extra Foot Mbappe's, Megacracks Fati's and Fussball Haaland's into chrome, finest, sapphire, contenders, etc

The strength of those releases is not that surprising when you consider how difficult it is to come across high-grade examples. Even for releases in the last couple of years. Fati has been a name long enough to build a healthy pop, and there's still only 59 PSA 10s out there.

Mbappe TC will not outsell his sticker in the same grade because it's an easier gem. But the TC is going to beat the more heavily produced Prizm with ease. And while it's not basketball, the basketball first guys (like myself) are certainly in the market.

I agree the high grade scarcity plays a big part but even for 9's things are way more even than I would expect. If you had given me a list at the start of the season of every upcoming release for Fati, for example, there's no way I would have imagined the MGK to be valued as high as it is in comparison to everything else, I wonder how much of an advantage being first is for the "domestic" releases? The increase in grading of these has helped them get their foot in the door quicker which has helped. There's money pouring in from all sorts of new eyes, there's also those whose collections have suddenly gone up many multiples and have a lot of house money to play with maintaining the status quo to some extent.

Out of interest when it comes to the really exclusive stuff, eg red chrome vs gold prizm, superfractor vs black prizm, which would you rather have? I was thinking about this the other day watching the blue Mbappe and thinking given the choice you'd take a purple / blue / green TC Mbappe over the Prizm equivalent any day of the week but I'm not so sure at the really low number end.

A 9 for an MGK is really good though. Surely going to see more Fati, Pedri, etc. 9s than in years past, but those are still tough grades.

If I had the money, I’d personally go Gold Prizm, Red TC, Black Prizm, then Superfractor from low to high. But it’s likely that the Gold and Red, and Black and Super would sell very similarly.

Amazingly 2017 is actually Messi & Ronaldo's first Topps Chrome cards also. Chance to be a pretty incredible set in the long run.

I absolutely loved opening them when they were affordable. Around a 66% chance to hit a Silver Refractor of any player in a case AND a 33% chance to hit a Color Refractor of any player in a case meaning that you basically get a Refractor (Silver/Color) of each player on average in a case. Really fun rip.

So, of course I ended up opening the case. Lasted about a week. Said I’d open two and wait to open the rest, but the boxes came out hot and I couldn’t stop. Pulled a mbappe green, purple, refactor, 7 base and 7 future stars/lighting strike. I also pulled a Messi auto /5 (the champions league team of the year insert) that I am absolutely thrilled about. The color mbappe was amazing to pull, and what I was searching for, but the Messi auto was a complete surprise. Other notable color - Messi purple, neymar gold and pulisic orange. Along with all the base/refractors of TAA, Bruno, Messi, Ronaldo, Messi, pulisic I think it was very worth it to open. Was a fun couple hours.

Congrats! I hit a CR7 Base Auto in my first case and was beyond thrilled with it. I think there is a "Hit" Auto per case with the hits being Messi, CR7 and a few others including Bale. Congrats on the 2 color Mbappe's! Great case for sure.

I jumped in collecting/investing trading card from few weeks. I saw during the last week various auction for Mbappe card. Very often I thought it is too late for me have a good card of Mbappe...as the player has actually lot of hype around him and the price is very high and I dont know if it would be a good deal bought one of that card.

I mean...rookie one has the price of my car..... the others, in any case costs over 500 eur and maybe it would be better bet on youngest players or actual rookies which could have an increase of their value?

Interested to hear your thoughts.....

Been noticing what I feel is some misinformation lately as the 2017 Select Unlimited Potential has been surging. Great card but people are comparing the low pop numbers to the base Chrome and Prizm to justify high prices which I think is very misleading.

It's an insert so it's more comparable to the Chrome Future Stars than a base card if you are going to use low pop numbers to justify high prices.

I think that Mbappe sale is an aberration rather than a reasonable estimate of value. Same card sold for something less than $135 just a few weeks ago.

And, this one w/ a lower print run sold for $73 less grading fees, seller fees, taxes and wait times:

I like Topps Now more than many, but the Haaland has the rare combination of being really early, very limited, and a great image. Just don't see similar value in other Topps Now. Ones that might have the most long-term value (outside of Haaland) are the Wirtz and Cherki because both are firsts and relatively limited print runs.

This card is not special at all, he has a ton of different cards from 2016-2018 , why would someone pay 1000$ for a 2019 card.
