Ok, this hobby has officially gone off the deep end... It was a stretch when we were paying $1500-$1800 a case for Topps Chrome, but there is absolutely no way to get value out of this product anymore. Is there some rookie to end all rookie seasons expected in this or is Topps just running up prices because they think they can? I’m about to liquidate everything if this is just the pricing trend...

So you're saying you can't flip middle reliever autos for thousands of dollars?

If people are willing to pay it, then that's what it's worth. If you all don't, then the price will come down. As a gambling man, I'm going to bet it sells out at these prices, but I will be very happy if proven wrong.

Holy #@#@#@#@, things were getting nutty but this has to be the worst yet right? I guess the hobby isn’t for anyone but breakers anymore. At those prices no normal person is ripping I hope. Those box breaks are going to be brutal

"I’m about to liquidate everything if this is just the pricing trend..."
I decided the other week that this is exactly what I am going to do. I'm not paying these prices so I will take advantage of the people that will. For example i have a 2018 Acuna Topps Chrome Sepia psa 10, i bought for 36 bucks. It's selling now for 400+, why would i not sell this? I feel the market is peaking right now, how long will it last? a few months maybe. The world is slowly getting back to normal (covid) and people are losing interest in the hobby since you cant even buy a pack of cards anymore without paying up or camping outside of target for hours (no thanks). It's hard for me to believe that, lets say November, i'm going to get 400+ bucks for that card, even if Acuna has a great year. The market just won't last like this. If some Jabroni wants to give me 400 bucks for a card that will be worth maybe 100 in 6 months because the market bubble busted, I'm all for taking that $$$$$$. I have a few cards in my personal collection that I dont care about the value, i'm not selling them. But the rest are up for grabs. |

I remember breaking a 2007 Topps Chrome case with my older brother and his friend for like $700 if I remember correctly.
Multiple Tulowitzki autos were pulled |

So the bag holders end up being the people that join the breaks, but since they break so much it looks like people are getting lucky. Its all gambling now.

you have to factor in all the cards being PSA 10 out of the pack. that is where the increase is coming from.

I usually purchase a box or two of this at the National since it comes out at the same time. No way, I'm wasting that kind of money this year.

It is not Topps creating this problem. The direct prices have risen but not to this level. It is the distributors and resellers like DandA and BO. Topps is producing less this year due to COVID. So that has contributed as well.
Breakers and allowing this type of selling is really the culprit. Someone who buys a $2500 case can make a profit by breaking so they keep the prices inflated by the sellers of cases. Even multiple box breaks contribute. It is the gamble by the people who participate in the breaks who are will to buy a spot for $60, 70 or more that make it worthwhile to do breaks so they can and pay high for a case. IMO Does anyone make sets? You can buy a set reasonably because there are breakers who make money with the hits and can sell the rest. Some people only want the hits and not the commons. I am old school and like to make sets especially when there is no factory set made like w Finest, TC, BC etc. This is my take on the hobby. |

If breakers are distributing the cards through their breaks then building sets would in theory be harder. Its only easier when a breaker breaks the product themselves. Assuming the breaks are by team, each box is getting split among 30 people.

Those prices are disgusting and absurd.
I distinctly remember taking a bath in 2018 at $129 a box, never mind $339. Enjoy the autos of this years version of Thiago Valera and Yusei Kikuchi |

Stick to singles. That's what I will do. Until the prices come down on boxes doubt I will open another again. That being said with these prices, the companies are basically saying bend over and take 2 for the team.

I guess the bigger question is what happens when people stop joining breaks? It won't hurt topps right away, but a lot of breakers could take a bath.

WHile I agree, this is all insane, and over prcied.
But remember 2011, 2014. Those Top Rookies were $1 maybe $5 for a refractor. The top Rookies are now $20 and Refs $100. That makes the price a little better. Used to be Basically $60 a box, $10 in base cards, $10 in Refs/Color and $40 left to gamble for 2 autos. But now you can recoup $50 in Base Cards, $50 In Refs/Color on avg. and leaves the two Autos to gamble at $240. The avg High end base auto is 2x What is was back then as well as mid range guys being 5x what it was. So really, these prices just make you Have to work to recoup. I wouldnt mind keeping all my base and Refs because it wasnt worth the $100-$200 I might keep for the 40 sales on ebay. But its needed to recoup the $1,000+ now

The quantity of RCs is high this year, the quality imo is low. Unless Wander and Witt get called up right away (don't hold your breath) this product will be filled with garbage autos. Who is the 19/20 year old non-pitcher in this set?
