Default 2011 Topps Update Trout - grade or not?

Opened some 2011 Topps with my kids back in 2011. Put them away in cardboard storage boxes. Just happened to stumble on to the fact the Trout is selling for crazy prices. Wow! Went looking through all the 2011 I had and only found one, but one is better than none so I'll take it. I've attached a scan of it to this message. If you were looking to sell, would you get this one graded or not? Thanks in advance!

Could possibly be a 10 ( based on pic only )

Therefore - PSA for sure
It’s really nice - congrats!

I think this card should be graded and soon before the fakes get any better.

So I need to get in gear on this. I had thought to sell some choice Luis Robert parallels to fund some what-will-be-fairly-expensive grading fees. Today I read that a trusted consignor I would want to use won’t accept raw cards now.

PSA 10 and $$$ mania is steadily squeezing this hobby and I can’t blame a consignment house for getting out of condition disputes. Everybody wants to buy raw gems over the Internet, and only gem raw, and get that raw>10 gain for themselves. I am going to grade a different key Rookie I hold that is a 7 at best, just so I can sell it without returns.

I believe I understand the basics for a card of the magnitude of US175 - acquire some Card Savers, tape between cardboard, wrap in bubble wrap, ship in bubble mailer in a box inside another box. Insure for $5K and ship Certified with signature required at every step.

What I don’t know is the current best strategy with PSA. Should I sign up for their membership type service for a better discount across ultimately perhaps 2 dozen cards to grade (not all Trout RC) ?

Should I declare $5K value and pay the requisite matching fee? What is that, now, after the latest fee increase?

I know that will be expensive. But have also been wondering - does that basic expense at least supply with it the same faster turn-around time that one could receive on a lower value card by paying extra? How long to get a $5K declared US175 back from PSA right now?

And then I am thinking - why not try one of these @ BGS (have more than one; maybe whichever one looks the very best under magnified illumination) - and roll some dice on high BGS qualifiers? Would a BGS 9.whatever on US175 really sell that much differently than a PSA 9? How much would one US175 cost in TX instead of CA?

And finally - has the new grading company coming into cards from comics (CGC?) graded a US175 that has been sold?

I mean, anything PSA 5 and greater is a no-brainer to grade, right?

Without busting out a pixel ruler, the OP’s card looks possibly 55/45 L-R centered to me. But I would still grade it, without question.

I appreciate all the replies. I’ve never had a card graded. Is PSA the only way to go? Looks like you pay per declared value - what would I use for the declared value of this card? Thanks in advance!

PSA is the only third party grader to use at the moment.
Don't assume a 10, declare raw value.
Insure what you feel comfortable with but, anyone that
has experience with insurance claims.
Will tell you trying to get money
out of the shippers is a tough battle.
Insure it for 500 and hope for the best.
Good Luck with what ever you decide to do.

If interested in selling raw, hit me up

I don’t like graded cards so, been thinking of trying to get a raw version if I can

Send that PSA 100%! That’s a great looking card! Congrats!

Also, grading right now depends on if you want to sell or not right away or put away for the long term. If you want to grade, go express with PCS (jewcer) on blowout. There’s a backlog but him and his team are the way to go! I’d say declared value would be what a PSA 10 sells for? Maybe an average of that and a PSA 9. Someone else I’m sure can help with that. Either way, awesome find! Get it graded and wait it out which ever way you decide to go!

Why is PSA the only TPG to use at the moment?

IMO - the reason PSA was the only Co. mentioned here for this Card and the OP:

~ They offer the most liquidity/ marketplace acceptance
~ they provide top $ per grade ( in many cases by far )
~ Sight unseen, it would be not wise to suggest BGS, as he could get a 9.5 - worth what, 1/2 or 2/3 of a PSA 10?
~ SGC is an “uncomfortable” choice for grading Moderns
~ the case is easy to crack if the OP changes his mind
~ the 478 other new companies out there have yet to be a reliable market option

Research graded prices vs raw prices and make a decision.

I appreciate the detailed reply. Everything you said made sense. I guess the only potential trump factor could be a BGS 10 pristine. I don’t know how realistic that is. All your reasons make sense and satisfy my curiosity. Thanks again!

I’ve always wondered if putting a US175 in a Card Saver is really the best option. I have 2 that I need to send in and to me, sacrificing the One-Touch seems well worth it to me. Are these high dollar cards really placed in Card Savers?

Good question. I thought PSA required a Card Saver?

Send it to PSA! If you don't get the grade you want, just send it in again until you get that 10! Even if it takes 20 resubs, you'll make that money back when you randomly hit that 10.

Considering the amount of reprints floating around, you should most certainly grade it especially if you ever plan to sell it.

Even though grading companies have been proven to not be able to detect reprints before?

Even though graded cards are still being shown as trimmed and altered?

Grading is to perform one task, help verify authenticity/condition and keep the card in that same condition. Countless threads on this board show grading companies, and PSA in particular, fail to do this.
