I know there's a thread for this, but Topps is going public through a SPAC.

Total revenue in 2020 of $567mm. If you assume they sold 2.4mm project 2020 cards at $15 per card that represents $36mm or 6% of total revenue.

Tough to tell investors that the Project 2020 revenue is going away until Project 2025.

I do wonder if their accountants will make them list Old Man Alan as a liability?

OPEC has 100% of revenue in oil yet they limit supply all the time to maintain pricing through scarcity.

People may not want your future products if your recent products don't hold value.

This is a good list. I'm bolding the ones I'd insta-buy. I'd buy 5-10 of Murphy.

I'd also add Eddie Gaedel and Gibby HR/Fistpump to the "Moments" list. We Braves fans would also appreciate a Cabrera/Bream card but I don't expect one.

Bo Jackson, Pete Rose, and Kirby Puckett are no-gos for now.

Why is everyone saying they can’t do a Bo Jackson card?

Simple. He is a retired player and their licensing agreements are different from the active players who fall under the MLBPA. Because Topps doesn’t currently have a license agreement with him, they cannot use his likeness on a baseball card.

I am thinking that those covers might fall under a different domain since they are already pre-printed matter. Who knows?

The only guarantee for today is that we will be seeing another rainbow on a card

Yep. I think another guarantee is that my wallet is probably staying closed (thank goodness.)

I really liked Wotherspoon's first 2 cards. So I am likely in for today's.

I think the Project 70 rights for retired players are only for the Project. I'm sure Puckett has been requested but no luck just yet.

vermonty,

What do you like about his cards? I'm just curious to get your perspective.

Thanks.

If we're getting all deep here, maybe it connects to the wow and awe that baseball and our favorite stars bring.

I like the way the Clemente came together. Besides "ooh, pretty colors!" there is almost a layering effect. I'm a sucker for happy players, as that evokes the joy that the game brings (nice choice of inset photo). The flag is prominent but doesn't overwhelm the card; likewise with the info on the outside honoring his place in the sport almost Sophia Chang style.

With the Ripken, the rainbow took a backseat, which is fine. I love the photo with autograph seekers; the perspective is a nice touch. Looking up it reminds me of being a kid looking up to these heroes hoping for a second of their attention. The fact that he is one if the biggest stars and he was there for the fans --day in and day out, as he's arguably more famous for his streak than his production--makes it stick for me.

Also, it's nice to get cards from teams like the Pirates and Orioles, despite being repeats of Project 2020 players.
