Yes, same for me. I've loved learning about Pokemon and expanding into that. I don't flip either. I've just enjoyed adding to the unopened collection. It's nice to at least have something else to look out for when you typically can't find any sports SKU worth buying on the shelf (not that Pokemon is so easy to find now either). I'm all for finding new interesting things to expand into as well.

Same here as well, has been a fun journey with my son who used to make fun of it. Nice mix of hobby / returns with it and good for the whole family.

Last week I was able to get a bunch of Donruss Baseball, which I LOVE to collect - logos or no it's always fun to rip and build the sets. A couple weeks ago I was able to pick up some Topps Series 1 to finish out my base set.

To be fair those products are a different thing. Those are pretty easy to get, the conversation is more around the hot basketball and football product.

Unfortunately for those of us that collect baseball, once we get to the better retail products like bowman chrome or topps chrome those won’t be as easy to get as donruss or s1 as they’ll have resale value.

There are plenty of lower middle class people that don’t have to do this to feed their families. But I’m sure it makes it much easier.

If you’re spending hours in lines on a regular basis to open only a few boxes of cards, never resell a box, and probably lose money I don’t know what to tell you. Sounds like the definition of insanity to me. Up until recently virtually every retail product being stocked in stores got down to around 2.5 times MSRP or less. Until Optic, besides for Prizm, every single 2020 football retail product got down to 2 times MSRP or less.So rich people with great jobs would rather save peanuts to them to buy those few boxes in stores versus buying at resale. They’d rather stand in the lines. Makes sense.

Never said every person running a bot is a millionaire. If you have a good bot you should have made millions in the last year. For example this one guy on Facebook got like 20 of the 199 Optic Premium football sets. If he got 10% of those how many boxes when Target and Walmart have put up 5,000-10,000+ boxes do you think a guy like that has got over the last year? Millions of dollars worth of profit. There were bots on Walmart.com getting 1,000+ boxes from 1 drop. Target on the first stock you used to be able to buy 100 boxes at a time on 1 account. This is just cards btw. Add in the ps5’s, sneakers, and all other flip worthy products. It adds up pretty quick.

I don't think there is anyone waiting in line at target for 3 retail boxes to feed their families. Almost all stores have a limit so you would make more money working a regular minimum wage job.

In my opinion and of course I could be completely wrong I think a lot of the people waiting in line to get retail are on extended vacations from the government collecting unemployment. And they make more money from unemployment plus this small hide hustle for less work then a real job would require.

Hit a restock earlier today shortly after store open, probably 20 select blasters, 15 prizm nba blasters plus a box of select fatpacks. 2 item limit so I went with select blasters.

EDIT: This was a target

It seems a bit crazy to me that the Select FB blasters are going for a good bit more than Prizm BKB blasters given BKB is a good deal hotter than FB. I picked up 1 of each last week.

Would be a product that kids could actually get since there really isn't a chase card like there was in 2020 OD.
They have blasters for OD.

There is just potentially too much money to be made. Select and Prizm are both selling for over 5 times cost. That doesn't include anything else or if Bowman is this week too. It's why, assuming it looks like Walmarts are getting a decent amount, I'll be forced to go out for hours for the give or take 20% chance I get any at Walmart or Target this week.

So you’re a flipper, not even just trying to get boxes for yourself. Well I hope your bad luck continues and you get shut out of every reload.

I guess I should have been more specific but just assumed people knew what I meant. I'm talking about the people standing in lines for hours. Not getting there an hour or less before the store opens. Anyone interested in cards that lives less than 20 minutes away from a Target and is getting there less than an hour before that is normal. If you're seriously wasting hours standing in lines to just never pay resale you're crazier than I am. Prizm and Select I get. But, especially if you're spending less than $1,000 on a product and make a great living, you would waste all that time to only potentially get the product and not pay 2 times or less MSRP is nuts.

$10 an hour, more than minimum wage in most states, if you work 40 hours pays $400 before taxes a week. Right now 3 blasters of Prizm or Select is over $300 profit for spending 12 hours or less. That's assuming you only get 3 boxes of 1 of them and don't get anything else. Obviously some stores have different policies but I think the majority of stores right now are either 3 per sku, 2 per sku, or 3 total items. Unless you can get insurance from that minimum wage job there is no reason to be working a minimum wage job over card hustling at Target and Walmart every week.

Im usually not a quick flipper. I try and hold now. I was a collector only for 25 years. I had the second biggest collection of Randy Moss cards in the world. As anyone that knows me on here knows. Up until February of 2020 I opened literally every retail box I got, some hobby, and FOTL. I've just changed like virtually everyone else in the "hobby" has. In 18 months it's gone from 95% collector 5% flipper/investor, etc to at least 95% investor less than 5% collector. In 2017 I spent more money to collect cards than I did from working my job. Until 2018 I never bought a single card or box with the intention to resell. If I would have decided in 2017 to be only a long term investor and open no wax I would be worth give or take $1.5 million right now and be retired. I'm not talking woulda coulda shoulda buys either. I'm talking about the product I did have. A good amount I opened and got back next to nothing. Like 12 18-19 Prizm basketball FOTL boxes of which the total contents were not even 50% of what 1 box sells for now. So save your judgments for someone else.

I'm a cheap b@st@rd, so I would rather wait in line than pay even 1 penny over MSRP. But, I've not been faced with a wait of over 30 minutes yet... we'll see what happens when Bowman releases.

That will be a true test for me, I've collected Bowman since it re-released in 1989 and had collected Bowman Draft every year it has existed UNTIL 2020. I give myself a budget of $300 per product I collect, if I can't reasonably expect to collect the set in that amount or under than it's a hard pass for me. 2020 was the first year that I couldn't do that for Bowman Draft, and I'm guessing that will probably be the case for 2021 Bowman as well.

I hope this whole friday morning thing blows up spectacularly. I won’t be getting any cards from target as long as it goes on so I’m hoping for chaos. Get out there and rumble!
