Stayed loyal at a price. No hometown discount by Strasburg.

As the million dollar man Ted DiBiasi says, "Everyone's got a price."

Crazy money for a guy with a history of injury problems who has only pitched 200+ innings twice.

Yeah, but I’m sure the Nats took out plenty of insurance. Will still eat up their cap though.

Who would insure him though? If there was someone even willing, I bet premiums are sky high

I don't think I've ever heard of an active pitcher having carpal tunnel syndrome.

Isn't this what David Price had a while back?
Said to be caused by playing too many video games.

Good call.

Strasburg's was caused by signing his name on that contract as quick as humanly possible.

This is going to be one of the worst contracts of all-time.

The question is what does Scherzer do (worth its own thread of course) but maybe start a brief convo here. He’s a competitor, does he leave Washington in the hopes of another ring seeing the Nats are sort of always rebuilding? Or is he now finally settled and retire a Nat? I put him at 3yrs left. Or course I want more, who wouldn’t.

He earned 7 years at 35 a year?

Yep. That ring, plus his past decade of service, has been worth more than that. It's a legacy contract and I'm happy to admit that.

Not exactly a good way to build a team. You don't shell out a 245 million dollar legacy contract.

The ring and winning 18 games also skewed how much he's actually produced in his career.

He's clearly past his prime, so I wouldn't dump a ton of money into him. If the Nats can keep him without sacrificing keeping Soto and Turner long term, then why not? He's a first ballot HOF and still has the desire and drive to play and win.

The biggest problem he faces is himself. He's not challenging anyone with his 94 mph fastball down the pipe; they end up in the seats 9 out of 10 times. He needs to rethink his pitching strategy. He doesn't need a 97 mph fastball to be a good pitcher, just look at Greg Maddux for example. He needs to become a smarter pitcher and think more about placement and pitch selection. I will say he's already really good at this, perhaps more so than most current pitchers. But he needs to recognize his own limitations and pitch around them. He tends to get overamped too, which only hurts him these days given he's past his prime.

As a Nats fan, I'd like to see him locked up as a Nat for the rest of his career, but not for another $210m. I'd rather see the Nats lock up Turner and Soto, and I think most Nats fans feel the same.

Soto will be a Yankee. Prepare yourself.

Among active players he's 13th in wins, 8th in ERA, 11th in Ks, 21st in innings, and 13th in WAR.

Obviously injuries were a known concern, but being one of the best pitchers of the decade and probably the 2nd best postseason pitcher of the decade earns that contract. Would you prefer they act like the early Nats and play with Tony Armas Jr?

I'm saying they didn't make a smart decision by keeping him at the price they did. They basicaly bought the peak, plus more. I thought something like 4/120 should've been the max.

A ball hit his glove. Caught him by surprise. Caused his eyes to leak. Walked off the field to get his blanky and sat in the corner rocking himself to sleep.
