Yep. The PSA surge makes uninformed buyers assume they can buy raw cards, mass sub and have free profits.
And if the cards aren't perfect coming out of packs, just 'doctor' them to make them perfect and bam, more free money. If people didn't blindly throw so much money at a company that doesn't even do the job they are being paid to do correctly, we wouldn't have these obscene prices. And before anyone jumps on it, I'm not against grading. I have many important cards with many important grades. Just frustrated with the PSA hype for no reason, too much bad stuff going on with them. |

Problems @Target mostly weren’t with baseball cards, really.

Honestly, IMO, the blame falls with grading companies not expanding fast enough to meet demand. These companies, PSA in particular, had an opportunity to expand to a level once only dreamed of and not only did they get caught with their pants down, they proceeded to trip over themselves multiple times after the fact.
And before you bring up the coof, they should have been working to expand long before any of this happened. The writing was on the wall 3-4 years ago. |

Arbitragers are to blame. Those are the ones that flexed into the card arena when prices jumped.

I know it's nitpicky but the author is using hobby only cards (the Lamelo Purple numbered to 99 and numbered to 1 and 5) as a reason why people would buy retail off Ebay. I know there are numbered parallels in retail but they are few and far between and nearly impossible to hit

Everything in this wacky market flows from the pandemic. None of this hype would exist but for lockdown, boredom reigniting old hobbies, hoarding, speculating for money, stimulus checks, etc.

He didn't mention the breakers but all in all a good article.
Also, in mentioning card sales he cited numbered prizm cards which I believe are only available in hobby. But I'm sure there are thousand dollar pulls in Prizm retail. |

IMO The blame flows downwards. Some blame goes to the manufacturers they should make it harder to hit parallels in retail and make a larger difference in value from retail to hobby. This would help the hobby stores drive business. Keep the retail exclusives like Target and Walmart and both parties can coexist. Then the distributors should also be capped on the markup that they are generating cause they are trying to benefit from being the gatekeepers as well as capitalizing on the secondary market. For instance, Topps sells a product at a discount to the MSRP price and then distributors release it for a markup price. Problem is when the price goes up in the secondary market, so does their price to capitalize on the demand but their initial buy in stays the same from Topps so that is a little sketch... In other similar models this is usually regulated by the Vendor but this never seems the case with Distributors in the card market. People on this board who have been collecting for a long time could see us moving this way as the increases have been rising. The good thing is we are starting to put these controls in place like restrictions in retail and even higher barriers in cost of grading that while they dont seem to be popular right now they will eventually help out the market. There are probably alot more reasons as well
