Default First HGA order back

My first order to HGA after two try’s every week for about 3 weeks, finally land a number within 100.
Really wanted to take full advantage of the moment, picked a few high value cards which I was hesitant to send to PSA or Beckett because of the high fees involved, these are very thick cards and are known to be tough grades on the corners and edges.

Five cards each costing $35 each for a 30 day return. Was happy to get the Shipped email after about 40 days which was totally acceptable in today’s environment. Not knowing the grades before opening the box arrive bring extra excitement.

Here are the results, was happy with it for sure. BTW all autos were graded 10’s which is shown on the back of the card, which my thoughts are if they can somehow squeeze into the front of the label would be better. (well, how about just the ones graded 10’s)

First time I see these Slabs in person, I think I really like the looks of it. The Labels looks good too, if you pick the right templates. On Second thought, I think the Lebron in Irish uniform would look much better if the colors on the label match his team colors (Gold)

You guys decide how fair these grades are, comparing to if they were done by the other big two.

You comments positive & negative are welcome and appreciated

Nice cards! No way the black college Lebron should be a gem mint.

I think you may have some trouble selling the black lebron at gem mint prices if buyers notice the condition.

That was a surprise on the happy side. No way I am sending it back for review thou ...

Kidding aside, my photo may be a bit off with some of the light reflections. These Black cards are really tough grades.

Thanks for the comments.

It’s still a great card though!

Wait..... LeBron went to College?

Most of the cards are graded .5 higher than they should be based on the subgrades. Pretty sure it is standard at BGS and CSG that if the lowest two grades match, that's the grade.

In the case of HGA, don't buy the grade, buy the subgrades!!!

Some strange looking grades there... on the first Exquisite, there are two 8.5 subgrades, so I'm not sure how it got a 9 overall. And on the UD black, two 9.0 subgrades, but got a 9.5 overall.

Looks like HGA just averaged out the subgrades... BUT also rounded up on those two.

How is the LeBron Black a 9.5 with 2 9 grades? How is the exquisite and 8 with7 and 7,5 sub? 3 of those cards final grade makes absolutely no sense.

Nice cards. Extremely generous averaging of the sub grades for three of the five.

That 4 auto’d Lebron/Bird/DrJ/Magic is freakin nice! 8 grade or not... having the label still look as nice as it does for an 8 is a big deal, white label BGS always drives me crazy.

9.5 on a Lebron card with soft corners and chipping all along the edges. Good lord.

I don't think anyone knows how they come up with their final grades...it seems to be all over the map from the various submission returns I have seen

yep -- with every passing day, I think HGA is proving they aren't a valid player in the grading market...inaccurate subgrades, final grades that make zero sense when looking at the subgrades, etc....I wouldn't even send my Welcome Back Kotter cards to them

It’s an average, and they round up if it’s greater than half way between two grades. Can’t be more than 1.0 higher than the lowest grade.

I think that is true,

I am always lucky when they assign grades by decimal points.

Don't ask me how I got the 9.5 when there is a 8.5 Surface grade on this one neither.....!!

38.50/4 = 9.625

It's on Beckett's website about their grading procedure. Very clearly states that a card with 3 x 10 subgrades and the Surface being a 8.5 will see a 1 point jump and final grade will be a 9.5.

I have a few of these in my possession with the 8.5 typically being from print lines. I was very curious as well and went looking to find more info on their standards.

For those wondering, HGA doesn't use the exact same scale as BGS.
  • They allow the overall grade to be 1.0 point above the lowest subgrade (2.0 above if overall grade is lower than a 5 I believe)
  • If a card has 2 lower subgrades (8.5s) but the rest of the subgrades bump the average above that subgrade (9.0), the overall grade will be the average, not lowest subgrade like BGS.

Some amazing cards there and I'm guessing they are for your PC?

How hard is it going to be to crack those out and get them slabbed by someone else years down the road if/when you decide to sell them?
