Default The Chase For The Greatest Set Ever - Signed Top 50 NBA Rookies

Have you ever wondered what is the most elusive set in all of sports cards? Some will mention T206, 1952 Topps or 1986 Fleer while others will argue for modern exquisite or PMG sets. Everyone has their own answer, but for me the question was answered with non licensed autographs. The best players in NBA history never had a licensed rookie auto. What is the next best thing? The players holding their rookie card and signing it. I first experienced this sensation when meeting Bill Russell at the age of 13. He told me I had something special in his 1957 Topps rookie card and he was ecstatic to sign it for me. In that moment, as a Celtics fan, I never felt closer to the sport nor the hobby. Fast forward to today and I have been pursuing signed rookie cards of the NBA Top 50 players as voted upon in 1996. The set has pushed me to every corner and facet of the hobby. Many of you have helped in my journey and I thought its time to share with everyone. To my knowledge, no complete set has ever been finished. Many people have chased it and even some on this forum, but many have come a few cards short before selling them off. Join me in my journey to complete the complete set. This thread is dedicated to the history, journey and appreciation of signed HOF rookies. Feel free to post your own examples. I will start the thread off with a picture of some of my favorites. I will share more details in posts to come. Follow me on IG: HOFvintagesportscards to see more! Enjoy!

This chase is a great one! I too share a real appreciation for signed RC’s. I spent a good 7 or so years collecting them across all sports. Basketball was always my favorite. I very rarely purchased any signed, but opted to obtain them on my own cards. That was my chase. I probably have close to 40 of the Top 50 RC’s. I fell out of the loop a few years back, as the circuit got really stale. And Jordan stopped doing Tahoe and his Flight Camp. But cyclically, I’ve actually got back into it and got a handful done so far this year.
I look forward to your updates and good luck on the journey!

Slightly off the subject but I saw a thread on another forum where a guy got the entire series 1 and 2 85 star court kings set autographed. Beautiful set with the larger cards autographed.

Awesome idea for a set! Kudos to you for trying it and good luck. Two questions, OP.

1) I'm assuming the Maravich will be the most difficult to obtain?

2) I see you are using some Fleer RC's for your set. Did you think about using the Star RC's for players like Barkley, Jordan, Stockton, etc. or were you always going to use the Fleers?

This is great! Love that you're a Celtics fan and the first one was Bill Russell when you were a kid and that got you excited about collecting.

As a Bulls fan growing up ion the 90s, I wish I had a similar story of MJ signing his RC for me...

Dope!

When I was a kid I was a big in person auto getter. Got bunch of the top guys but never got Jordan.

Will be awesome to check your progress. Good luck!

I think Wilt might be the most difficult. There are only 3 PSA graded Wilt RCs.

OP, this is an awesome chase. Good luck to you. I’m working on a similar collection across multiple sports. I have a ways to go on basketball unfortunately and it’s gonna be an expensive road from here.

Awesome stuff! Love the vintage rookies when there was just one true rookie.

I've seen more Wilts than I have Petes...although I'm pretty sure 1 guy owns 2 of the Wilts.

There are 3 Wilts and 6 Maravichs authenticated by PSA, but I would be skeptical of the authenticity of any Maravich. Maravich died in 1988 at a time when basketball cards weren't collected and people didn't get cards autographed like today. Wilt died 11 years later, it doesn't make sense to have more Pete's.

Having PSA authenticate them doesn't mean much. They have authenticated 12 Roberto Clemente autographed RCs and every one that I have seen has been fake. Clemente died in 1972, but Mays in the same set has only 5 signed copies despite Willie still being alive.

OP good luck chasing down signed cards, but take note that there are many fakes out there. Just like TPGs aren't very good at detecting altered cards, they also have trouble detecting forged autographs. Especially on rookie cards which people didn't try to get signed until recently. For a long time it was seen as devaluing expensive cards to get them signed.

There are so many variables here. I would say it's a lot easier to find 1970 cards than it is 1961. Maybe Pete was a better signer TTM, so more people sent to him.

I wish I could find it now, but I remember a poster on either here or SCN showing off a complete signed Topps run from Maravich. He wrote about how his dad knew Maravich and he remembered watching Pete sign them while sitting on the trunk of a car.

My next post entails listing the details of the entirety of the set. There were 50 greatest NBA players voted in 1996, but only 49 total rookies. Larry Bird and Magic Johnson are featured on the same rookie along with Julius Erving. That means this complete set actually contains only 49 cards, but 51 total signatures. I have discussed the set with many collectors and have come upon the final list below along with some variations. As collectors we have the privilege of determining when something is valuable, and as such I expect this set to continue to morph as collectors desirability changes. I have 43/49 of the cards and the ones I am missing are in bold, which happen to be the six lowest POP cards in the set, excluding MJ. Some members previously mentioned the authenticity of the rare autos. Through my research I discovered most Maravich's are in low grade and were all signed at one time. The Wilt Chamberlain only has four copies and supposedly more will appear in the pop report, as PSA reopens grading. Please share any insight you might have on any of the cards. Thanks, Alex

Seeing this thread makes me sad about some of the ones I've let go of in the past.

This is a crazy chase and one that will give you an absolute buzz every time you track one down. I will definitely be watching this thread closely.

#1 - Bill Russell 1957 Topps Rookie

This is the card that started the chase more than a decade ago. Growing up everyone was fascinated with Topps Chrome and Finest, but I gravitated towards the rarer vintage as a kid. Being in Boston I idolized the older 50's and 60's Celtics and my dream grail card was a Bill Russell Rookie. 11x NBA Champion, 5x NBA MVP and 12x All Star, one of the top five to ever play the game. I was able to get the one in the middle a SGC 3 at the time and cracked it open. I had a chance to meet Bill Russell and got it signed in person at a local card show. The experience was quite the thrill. It still remains my favorite card to this day and that's the reason I have three of them

HOLY crap that will be a hard set to put together. I wish you all the best on that endeavor! Will be truly amazing to see.

I did the Top 50 also, but stuck to just Autos (on card autos if I was able to)..was very satisfying to watch with the footage from that Top 50 event. If you ever get there, do a split screen like mine!

https://youtu.be/JpQ6hrVgzSs

A must watch for any BBall fan who has never seen that All-Star Event

PS: Poor Dominique!

Good luck. I decided to collect the 1996-97 topps NBA@50 finest reprints a long time ago. I have the complete set and would like to build the refractor set too, but the Jordan is out of my price range.

It has been awhile, since I updated everyone. I will post them by year starting with the oldest. I am missing the 1948 Mikan, so will begin with 1957 Topps. A beautiful set with every card being a rookie. I have them all signed of the Top 50 set except for Paul Arizin, which is a POP 8. The POP counts are from the PSA pop report. It has taken me a many years to acquire these. If anyone has any leads on any others especially the Paul Arizin and '48 Mikan please let me know! Thanks, Alex

In the picture below:
2x Bill Russell (POP 60)
2x Dolph Schayes (POP 20)
1x Bill Sharman (POP 16)
1x Bob Cousy (POP 61)
1x Bob Pettit (POP 47)

Its been a bit over a month since my last update. This Labor Day Weekend I am taking some time to appreciate my collection more. Without further ado below are my signed 1961 Fleer rookies. Not shown is my signed Oscar Robertson rookie which is stored at PWCC vault. I have been pursuing many of these cards for quite awhile. The Len Wilkins and Sam Jones are fairly common and good pickups for any HOF collector. The West and Oscar are uncommon with 80+ in the pop report and carry a premium being iconic stars. Elgin Baylor unfortunately passed away earlier this year and his are harder to find being a pop 50. I recently was able to pick up the Hal Greer and Wilt Chamberlain in a massive deal with a good friend of mine. The wilt is a POP 2 and the Greer is a POP 7. Two cards that are incredibly difficult to find! I am now only 4 cards away from completing the Top 50 Greatest auto set! Please keep your eyes out for a signed 1948 Bowman Mikan, signed 1957 Topps Arizin, signed 1970 Topps Maravich and a signed 1986 Fleer Michael Jordan!
