I really love Gypsy Queen but without retail, I'll probably pick nothing up but Yankees cards n the secondary market.

But of those others you mentioned Gypsy Queen is BY FAR the best. I despise Allen & Ginter... its ugly and full of those stupid non-sport inserts, I think Heritage and Archives are decent but neither hold up to Gypsy Queen imo.

I have always absolutely loved the look and feel of Gypsy Queen, and the minis (before they nuked those) were GREAT, I was excited to see those back again. BUT... no retail and $250+ per hobby box make this a definite pass for me. Too bad really.

Wasn't Opening Day supposedly nixed too for retail? There has been a ton of it

Seconded. I think A&G is a waste. Heritage is good but Archives should be dumped as the years will eventually be gotten to in Heritage.

what should i expect the price of a hobby box to be? i've seen $250 and $275 tossed around in here but i thought it'd be closer to $225? what has it been in the past? (sorry, first time going in on a GQ hobby box. always bought retail/singles before)

This is a vastly under rated comment.

I agree about ginter. The only reason I open it at all is cause my kid likes the whale and chicken cards.

Its pretty blah even with a good rc class. With a bad to mediocre one... no one cares. This was one of the few products that you could get 2018 product of without much difficulty.

Unfortunately the rookie class has dropped tremendously with Hayes, and Alex Kirilloff not having monster years. They've had decent years for rookie players but unfortunately not killer years

It needs to be at the start of the season. It does pretty well when it’s one of the first releases, nobody will care now

Another product that is moving further and further away from it's roots.

I've collected it in the past, and liked this year's design, but the checklist is all active players.....ZERO retired players except for 20 SP's.

Last time I built the set (2014), there were 89 retired players out of 350 base cards (about 26% of the checklist).

UPDATE.....just looked at the checklist from the last few years and saw that there haven't been retired player base cards since 2015....guess that's how long it's been since I last considered building the set

Also the ridiculous price point nobody is paying but breakers

Product was ok at 90-110

But 180-200 is a complete joke

Allen ginter is one of the most popular products topps makes

It’s why they made ginter x and chrome

With that being said. I get why people don’t like throwback products

Chrome and autographs bore me. Glad we have choices

People do like throwback products.....they just don't like overpriced throwback products that have virtually identical designs year after year and are long past their sell-by date.

I'd love to see Topps use some of their classic football/basketball/hockey/non-sports designs in a throwback baseball product, for example.

How about a baseball product using the classic 79-80 hockey design?
Or how about a baseball product using the classic 1977 Star Wars design?

Those would sell a lot better than GQ......

It's not that I don;t like A&G because it is a throwback product. Obviously I have said I love Gypsy Queen and that is a throwback product. I don't like Ginter because to me it looks boring year after year and I collect baseball cards; not cards of other athletes, rock stars, monuments, etc.

I actually did like the look of Ginter Chrome last year, but still not enough to purchase any beyond the Yankee cards.

Those would be cool. I like the idea of rotating sets, but Ginter is probably to popular. I'd rotate Ginter, GQ, and T206.

I would've argued the opposite - I think Topps has too many random sets where vets and retired players and nobody RCs are all mixed together in one really weird, small, base set that makes no sense. So I actually collect GQ since it's a set that makes some sense on the surface, by filtering out the retired players.

Of course, the argument should be that it's the other sets that should ditch retired players, not this one.

Long story short, it shows Topps just really doesn't care about their base sets. At all (outside of photography in Stadium Club, I'll be fair). And it's a travesty.

I would take your argument one step further and state that Topps doesn't really care about most of it's products.

And why should they? These days, breakers and investors are willing to buy pretty much anything they release, at just about any price point.

That's why Topps' product quality has dropped so much over the past few years....

Not necessarily. Unless Heritage eventually starts over again, all the designs up to 1972 are done for good. So Archives does have a niche to fill by showing current players in designs that Heritage has already done.

However, that said, Topps has done a very inconsistent job of picking good designs for Archives, including choosing modern designs that aren't really retro at all.

Would love to see Archives start incorporating more of Topps non-baseball designs....for example by have a 300-card set that is 100 cards vintage football design, 100 cards vintage basketball design, and 100 cards vintage hockey design.

This would be pretty cool since I most of those designs would be new to me despite the vintage look.

Here's a real problem with this set. I thought we were talking about Allen & Ginter and did a search for the checklist. It took me a second to figure out it's Gypsy Queen. I get those two products mixed up all the time when I get them in mixed lots.
