Topps has driven me crazy over the years. But they are topps. And the lineage of their cards is essentially considered the lineage of baseball cards. And this is shocking and sad in that respect. My PC is 99% topps cards. They are iconic.

They also suck in a lot of ways. I'm just not overly confident another company won't also suck in a lot of ways.

Did I read it that they are about to get the license to nba and nfl. Wonder if panini will suit together against a monopoly in the card world

So this isn't until 2026, right? That's when the MLB and Topps agreement is up.

Yes, honestly this is what should be rooted for.

“The MLBPA deal begins in 2023. MLB’s current agreement with Topps runs through 2025.”

Does this mean 2024 and 2025 will be Topps with MLB logos but no player names?? I remember the old Griffey nintendo games had mlb license but not mlbpa and had to use made up names for the players. I hope not the case

No chance. That's not the way they've run any of their businesses. The Fanatics name has been front and center on every new business acquisition/venture even when it was outside their initial scope.

At the time I typed, was 10.78 on TD. So no, not negative. Tanking? Yes. Tanked already? No.

Wish it was Panini that lost its license instead

I'm with most here who think this is definitely weird but a bummer too. We all know money talks but the idea of a licensed sports card without Topps or Panini (who just took over Donruss/Playoff anyways) is quite numb feeling imho.

If this truly crosses over to NBA and NFL, then oy...

Maybe it's time for me to finally start dating Lol (Crude humor for someone who doesn't get out much)

What the heck??? This is awful.

So is Fanatics related to Panini? Or are they just a separate company?

Just doing a quick read, it looks like MLB participated in a seed round for Fanatics through Softbank. Looks like they will be getting rich twice. NFL was in there as well.

From press release this looks doubtful - MLB and MLBPA will have equity stake in the new company formed to solely produce trading cards. Unfortunately all about money. However, you would think MLB could get more money by having multiple partnerships but maybe don’t want to put in the effort to work out multiple deals.
