Default $5000 Challenge

Let me start by saying, this is a real question. I also posted this on the football board to get input from that side.

I have a friend that is not into cards. At all. But I’ve been telling him about what I’ve been collecting and what the market has been doing over the last 18 months. Intrigued by the recent swings in the market and the news about Fanatics, he wants to buy a card or two with a $5k budget. His goal is investment, not to collect. I have complete discretion to pick.

This one has me a bit stumped. I have a long list of cards that I want to buy for myself. But I don’t really look at those decisions with an eye towards value appreciation. I buy what I like. It’s easy for me to spend my own money but I’m finding it difficult to spend someone else’s money.

What would you buy with a $5k budget?

Pick the five rookies that you like the best and buy 10 of their cards with the most upward potential. Invest the rest on any combination of MJ/Kobe 90s inserts and galactics/Kaboom.

Take the $5,000 and invest it in the SP 500 or Nasdaq 100.

Will get a much safer and better return with no risk of downside and much easier to sell.

Completely foolish for someone with no knowledge of sports cards or some newbie to try and invest $5,000 and make money right now.

Why do these posts never come up prior to a big run up in sports cards prices?

They always come up AFTER we have had a big bump up.

A fool and his money are..........

Sounds like he wants you to do all the work and manage this “investment”.

Just throw his money in SPY and take 1.5%. Free money

Your friend is relying on you, which in turn you are relying on internet message board strangers to get advice on how to invest $5,000. Don’t get involved in this. Let this guy decide how to “invest” the $$ on their own.

Let me clarify. This friend has money to burn. This is something fun for him and a challenge to me. He has plenty of other sound investments.

I had a buddy who wanted to give me $50K and manage a card portfolio for him.

There’s no upside for me. Just a headache of having illiquid assets with the potential of losing his money.

Don’t do it.

Some sort of Jordan auto. If you can even get one for $5K. When he dies that stuff will skyrocket.

Like geech said. There is absolutely no upside in you doing it for him.

Let him burn his own money

We don’t play games at BO. We deal in harsh realities.

The real answer is: any Brian Scalabrine 1/1 rookie card.

Any and all Zarko Paspalj RC's you can find in 90-91 Skybox. Thank me later.

I'll take 1.5% for this recommendation.

Probably not a bad idea.

Potentially Fortnite cards, too.

Gotta think of what will be nostalgic to people who will be in their thirties in 15-20 years when they start getting disposable income.

Purely talking basketball, probably a serial numbered Lebron rookie - Psa/Bgs 8 or 9 (I think 10’s are overpriced in general as long term investments. Just Ky opinion). Or maybe a Kobe high end 90’s/2000’s insert / parallel.

These are lousy investments. Disagree that they are safer, just lower return. I would advise a Goudey Ruth or t206 Cobb. For basketball Jordan, LeBron and Kobe. RCs, autos and tougher inserts are safe and going to give solid returns.

Don't invest other people's money. As others have said - not worth the headache and potential BS that will potentially follow.

Best MJ rookie you can find for $5k is how I would approach this. If an MJ rookie doesn't appreciate in value, I don't see anything else going up either.

Besides MJ and LeBron, another player you should consider is Kobe Bryant, especially autographed cards. With Kobe's passing, in due time, his autograph cards are going to be no more. If I had $5000 to burn I would definitely burn it on Kobe Bryant autographed cards, especially if I could get my hands on card autographs which are more appealing to collectors. But that is only if I had money to burn....

Agree with this. If you're going to put money into anyone it should be MJ, Kobe or LeBron. They're as bulletproof as you're going to get investment-wise when it comes to basketball cards.
