We could start a gofundme page for that $20 the OP needs for the box

Where did OP go?

In regards to the Fanatics discussion, good for them. It sounds like you were hoping for some kind of gloomy, Eeyore response with a discount attached to show you they will do anything for your business. What you got instead was some version of "Eff Fanatics, we made our money, if we have to shut down then so be it". I absolutely love that mentality. Small businesses have been replaced by corporations for years and if it happens again and the shop owners can go out with a bang, good for them. This was a HARD businesses before 2018 or so. LCS' deserve every penny they've capitalized on during the hot streak.

Does the flipper have over head? Do they have to pay rent and electricity? They are nothing alike. Stop.

This was over 20 dollars.

My lcs is charging $650 for a 2021 Chrome Jumbo box and 99% of his inventory is blasters marked up to $60. Feel better?

Did you also go in and tell him how much you should pay and how he will be out of business soon? That seems to be a thing apparently with the kid collectors

The store owner sounds like the guy who would have a crew wait outside Ttarget until the vendor showed up, buy a bunch of $20 blasters, and then list them for $50 at the shop.

This is a good lesson learned for some of our newer collectors about card shop/show etiquette and their own personal entitlement. Treat people how you want to be treated. I'm sure OP is a good guy but does need the feedback being provided to think about it a bit differently and understand why the dealer wasn't willing/required to move.

Started out talking about all the fanatics stuff going on and what that might mean for hobby shops moving forward. His thoughts on the matter were “I’ve made plenty running this shop the past 5 years that I really couldn’t care less what happens to hobby stores when fanatics takes over. If I have to close, so be it”. My buddy and I were a little taken aback but soon after I asked about his topps chrome prices. He had jumbos for $400 and I asked if he were willing to move on price. Brought up blowout has them for $380 and his response was “well I have the cheapest price in town.” And having done my research I said no you’re not, ‘other hobby store’ has them for $375. His response was “that doesn’t sound very ‘other hobby store’ of them. And then I asked “still not willing to move on price?” Reply was “nope” and we walked out. A**hole would rather not make a sale on a product he paid $240 for and would’ve still profited over $100 on a single box with a discount than give someone a ‘deal’. Proceeded to go to the other store and talk them down to $350 and got my five rookie pitcher autos haha. For the good store owners that are out there for the collectors, I wish you all the best but I’m not gonna be sad at all if fanatics runs turds like this out of business.

Tl:dr Hobby store owner greedy, fine with going out of business due to fanatics cause he’s well off from recent years, didn’t budge on a $400 box of topps chrome jumbo.
Tl:dr internet hobby bois don't understand how running a local hobby store works.

Bringing up prices on boxes is typically never a good move, especially if you've been there before, and are aware of his personality.

You mentioned that he typically has the best prices around, so, after seeing the prices on the chromes why not just head to the other store? You just seem bitter that he wasn't willing to haggle on price, which is his right as the shop owner.

First of all I rarely step foot in a card store because I can find most everything I want cheaper online. But I have no problem with op asking for a price match. Does the owner want a sale or not? Haggling is a common practice at card shows so what's the big deal here?

what if he did not buy from factory???

you do realize there are lcs stores that do not qualify for, or cannot buy direct due to allocations, and other reasons.

lcs could have paid $600 for that box he is selling for $650.

Nobody knows whats going to happen with Fanatics when they enter the hobby completely. 4-5 years is a long while. Stop with the wild speculation, doom and gloom.

If you feel that it is horrible pricing, don't buy it! Nobody is forcing people to pay that price.

Many stores have to buy at secondary market pricing. Smaller shops often cannot get many products direct or they have to committ heavily to a less popular product to even get a chance to sniff other products at factory costs

Then you just move on. It's the owners perrogative.
