My sense is this is more like sports drinks. People buying hope and hype more than results. Right now there aren’t players like KGJ or Ortiz that are larger than life pubic personalities. So all anyone buys is dreams of future on-field stardom. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Total homer call… but the point is more that the current set of players aren’t even to the Jeter / Ortiz local market transcendent level. Let alone the KGJ national phenomenon level. Right now current players are defined by their performance more than notoriety Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

You may be right (I don’t have friends in that market)… he’s probably the most obvious candidate to get there on my opinion. Maybe nationally, too Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I think both Trout and Soto “amaze” more than electrify by demonstrating their sustained high-level play. Some guys flirt with hot streaks where they get there—it’s the norm for Soto and Trout. You’re right though—prospectors are trying to find the next Trout. The next Soto. They buy the hope and hype on them. But like I said—it fits into that part of the formula that eventually translates to hobby good. You have to first have hype and hope before you can deliver on it. |

One thing to consider re: Griffey, he only had a short time where he was the most sought after player. When he came up he was the next Canseco. Then Bonds was the guy while he was winning his first three MVP. Then Ripken as he approached Gehrig. Then McGwire and the HR chase. Then Bonds again. By that time Griffey was old and busted while Pujols and then Trout were the top guys.
For all this nonsense about who is going to be the face of baseball, while active it is almost always whoever is the best player. You talk about Tatis being that guy right now, yet his prices are exactly the same as Acuna and Soto...both coming off of "down" years. The reason Griffey ends up being the top dog from the 90s is because he was able to stay clear of PED suspicion. Heck, even Jeter was second fiddle to A-Rod until PED.
