This year I've only ripped Prestige megas and H2 Classics. I used to pick up Donruss Hobby and then Optic/Prizm retail, but both got too expensive.

For baseball I usually pick up a flagship jumbo or two, and then some Chronicles hobby. Chronicles is getting worse though as Panini keeps removing sets and making them stand alone. 18 had Prizm and Select, then those were made stand alone. 19 had Spectra, 20 Spectra and Mosaic, and now Spectra and Mosaic are their own offerings.

Then in the past I would often pick up a blaster or Mega of whatever was in stock. I weep thinking about 2019 and I could drop into Target/Walmart and find something good. In fall 2019 I even recall ordering 2017 football products and 18/19 Optic BKB megas from Walmart at MSRP or lower.

No.

Pre-pandemic I probably busted $7.5k worth of FB / BB / BkB / Hockey / Non-Sports a year. Never by the case (which is dumb), a just $500 worth every few weeks as funds were available.

I know what wax is worth to me, and it's not these prices.

That being said, I got a pretty good deal on 4 boxes of Mandolorian Season 2 which I bought off eBay with some eBay bucks, so that will probably be my first rip in years.

I buy singles and I get into a few Star Wars Stellar breaks on these forums every year.

I still buy boxes on occasion to break for fun because that is what the hobby is to me - I collect what I open and I don’t buy singles.

However, instead of buying boxes on a weekly basis like in the past, I will buy maybe once a month or two.

Even with the ridiculous prices, I will try stuff I like to try to pull a monster.

If I hadn’t tried a box of 2020 NT, I wouldn’t have pulled a Herbert rpa, which is something I could never justify buying as a single.

That’s why you open still, to pull stuff you can’t buy or find.

Just do it way less often.

I've never busted any hobby boxes or cases and I've been collecting since 2010.

I was in college back then and had no money to do so anyway, BUT if hobby box prices were what they were back then, I'd be open to it these days. $70-$90 hobby boxes will never retain, though.

Yes, I am still buying boxes but nothing current. Mainly purchasing older products from 2016 and before. 2017-current are not worth the gamble for me. $400-500 a box for maybe $40 return...horrible investment. I rather go the play blackjack at a casino with a higher chance of breaking even and I don't go to casinos but just letting you know what my thoughts are.

I am also more willing to pick up some singles here and there in ebay.

Last time I opened a football box was in 2004. Still like opening products for fun but with the prices of boxes now I don't. I do pick up retail packs if I see them in the stores when passing by. But mainly just pick up singles.

Same here. Last hobby boxes I opened for basketball were 2018-19 prizm. Last boxes of football were 2016 optic I believe. I use to bust a ton of chrome. Sad that I opened a case of 2014 Bowman Chrome football @$299 and now a single boxes is $349.99. Other than some lower numbered refractors of brady, manning and maybe Rodgers the value from those boxes is probably down from when I opened my case.

Opening a $70-90 box and getting $30 or less in cards wasn’t a big deal as the thrill of opening has a good value to make up the difference. Opening a $300-400 (or more) box of cards and getting $30 or less is a gut punch. The value in the thrill of opening can’t make up for that loss.

Do I buy boxes? Yes.
Do I rip boxes? No.

Last box I ripped was a Donruss Elite box that accidentally was sent to me instead of Donruss Clearly NBA. Because I paid much less for that box, I opened it up. Didn't get much but it was good to rip a hobby box.

I did get antsy and ripped a box of Panini One I got at a reasonable price, and pulled a non numbered LT, so that broke me emotionally

Last hobby box i ripped before that was 2017 Prizm Hobby Jumbo that I paid $114 for

I have a 2020 Optic Hobby sitting sealed and purchased a couple of 2021 Prizm Hobby to put away for the fanatics era, but there is absolutely no way I will open these up.

It’s always been 90% retail and 10 % hobby for me but I just can’t justify spending money on blasters or hobby boxes anymore. The value is not there anymore and finding the blasters or megaboxes that could have decent value are impossible to find, once the secondary market set the prices I stopped buying unopened product and just started selling singles I had on eBay as it was no longer fun to buy and I could recoup a lot more selling my hits of the past.

2021 was the least amount of wax I have opened since probably 2000-2005 ish

I refuse to pay the prices that breakers have pushed wax to

One great thing has come out of it

My collection has really grown

I will never go back to opening 30-40 cases a year

Pretty much priced out as a set collector. The new money is winning, In the end, they will lose, can’t wait for it.

I share the opinions of most in this thread, but we must obviously be in the minority. Prices continue to go up and product continues to sell out. I don’t see that changing anytime in the near future.

If you are looking for an “affordable” box to rip of 2021 product, look no further than Classics H2 Boxes. $150 for 10 packs. Had a lot of fun ripping a few of these boxes with the kids.

I still buy some older boxes (1984-2007) but don’t even think about ripping them. Ok, yes i think about cracking them lol. I am keeping the hobby boxes I have sealed with the hope that they appreciate in value over the next 20 years & take the profits & put towards something more tangible (kids college tuition, sick vacation, updates on house)

As many have stated, buying a $500 hobby box w/ 2 player relics & a FA auto is the definition of insanity

The breakers will buy up product at the inflated prices because people want to pay less to target the players they want. With more and more product being printed the good hits are getting harder and harder to pull. Hitting a couple in each case break make them seem more prevalent.

Those of us who occasionally open a hobby box for fun are getting tired of coming up empty more and more often.

There will be a point where it starts to go the other way, but with breaks continuing to sell out we aren’t there yet. Breakers are making tons of money and just gobbling up more product.

This is by far the major reason why individual collectors can't open boxes at a reasonable price.

30 degenerate gamblers are willing to pay more for a single box than you as an individual collector. At some point in time you would hope they would get sick of losing money, and I believe it will take an economic downturn for that to happen.

Degenerates is exactly how you should describe anyone buying into breaks. Embarrassing lack of backbone.

haven't bought a box of football (or any sport) in over 2 years, I've just switched to Marvel stuff.

When a football box costs 200 bucks and you're most likely to get a couple mem and one $3 auto, that's an easy pass.

Get into the 400 bucks for a box that you MIGHT get a $20 auto, makes it even easier, the hobby has been destroyed by gamblers

A lot of good feedback! Seems like a lot of people have stopped buying since everything went crazy. Some even longer than that. Seems to be a lot of new blood in the hobby about making the quick buck and not for the collecting aspect. Hoping everything comes back to reality sooner than later. Wishful thinking i know. I really enjoy the hobby and miss being able to buy boxes and singles at a real market value and not all the inflated craziness.

Unfortunately all the group breakers buying product will make it hard to come back to reality, but maybe some of the gamblers will see the light and realize you're losing money much more than making it.

What about a $5000-6000 box where the biggest hit is a retired vet auto that nobody gives a damn about that will sell for under $100?
