Default Albert Pujols 2001 Bowman Chrome RC Auto PSA 10 on Goldin

This card caught my eye right away when I was looking through all of the new auctions on Goldin. While the autograph looks legit (I’m not saying it’s fake), it definitely looks like it was signed after the original release. Looks much different than his other autos from 2001 and resembles more of the nice cleaner looking auto that he currently uses.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on this? Link to the auction is below.

I didnt even read the paragraph, I saw the pic initially and my first instinct was it is re-signed.

I think some were just signed with a thinner sharpie but could definitely be wrong on that.

Here’s one that resembles the auto, albeit in a thicker sharpie. Graded in 2009.

Do you have pictures of other AP BC Auto cards to compare this one against?

Many, many, many of these were (trimmed) wiped and re-signed. I would have to question the sig as being authentic on most of them.

Good catch. Yeah maybe it's just that thinner pen in the Goldin auction that makes it look off.

Need a pic of the back as well. Many of the serial #s were wiped and changed since this card is hand serial #ed.

These are legitimate autos from that set:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-ALBERT...-127632-2357-0

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2001-Bowman...-127632-2357-0

The linked auto from PWCC looks wiped and re-signed, as does the one in the OP. Pujols’ signature was not that “loopy” in 2001.

Still no guarantee. I mean, that card has been a target for fraud since day 1. So still could have been wiped and re-signed in the 2001-2009 interval.

I purchased mine in the summer of 2020 and did quite a bit of research regarding the 2001 BC auto. Fading was a significant issue on a lot of these autographs as they were frequently displayed in stores/cases/shelves and the ink technology at the time was new to chrome. I believe it was the infamous Kevin Burge who was known for wiping off the the autograph resigning it over a period of years when it was the hottest card in the hobby 2005-2009.

In my experience Pujols' auto was a lot more primitive in 2001 and the 'u' was often not present in his RC year signatures. Not to mention he slanted his letters to the right when he signed his early stuff. He developed his more modern signature a couple years later ~2003ish. While the auto on the Golden PSA 10 might be real i would be willing to bet a significant amount it was NOT signed in 2001

Same was done to one of his orange autos, but that was due to the auto being 95% faded away.

The auto on yours is how I would expect the legit 2001 autos to look. I’d be skeptical about anything else. I guess collectors/buyers don’t really care though (or maybe just unaware) as the auction is over $60k already.

Who in the world is bidding on that Goldin auction? haha

I would also bet big money that was wiped and resigned. Auto is v v v different from Pujols' 2001 script. Newer auto seems easier to fake and could v well be faked too.

This one also looks resigned at a later date. But the serial number and topps hologram number seem to check out?:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/14437145918...kAAOSwh0xh4gyL

What a frustrating card to own... Even a few of the BGS graded ones on eBay look faked or at least resigned later.

Card companies should contract players to not allow their players to resign cards after the date of signing. Period.

This is crazy to me. I'm no Pujols auto expert but nothing about that auto looks right. People just trusting the grade with no research.
