This is a $6,000+ Hobby Box. When I bought it last year, they were selling for around $5,000. I got it for a $1,000+ discount, because there was writing in Pen, across a portion of the back of the box - pretty much from the entire left side to right side ( 1st pic )
This week I went to Staples, and bought an ink eraser for about $1 ~ it worked ( 2nd pic ). Point being, sometimes a little solution can solve a big problem …. ![]() ![]() Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

If the sealed box itself is considered the collectible in this case then of course it has been altered. How is it any different than altering any other collectible by erasing something or removing something?

Of course you could also say it was already altered by someone having written on the box to begin with, so isn't he actually just restoring to its original un-altered state?

What if a Sealed Topps Blaster Box had a 40% off sticker added by Target when they sold it, and the Buyer removed the sticker — taking the box back to its original manufactured look and condition. Is that altering? …. And if not, how is it that erasing non-factory pen marks is ?

Folks - erasing writing on the plastic wrap, surrounding a cardboard box, surrounding foil wrappers, surrounding the actual collectible is *not* an "alteration" in the same sense trimming one of those cards. Dios mio.

It's taking something that is devaluing the collectible and removing it to increase the value. You can't factor in whether the person doing it is a nice guy or in the conversation at the moment. The answer needs to stay consistent once you drill down i to the action itself. |

![]() Bought a garage sale lot of boxes for $5 apiece and this was was in the lot (unwrapped of course). This was a little over 2 years ago and in total there were about 100 sealed boxes of baseball, basketball and football, this was by far the best but there were many other good ones. its like removing writing from a card. Sorry to learn this. have you altered other boxes in your collection?

Completely altered. I'd be wary of anything in your collection moving forward.

If there is dust or dirt on the cellophone wrapping of your box and you wipe it off, is that altering? If not, then how is that different than what was done here -- it's ink vs. dirt. The only question, for me, is whether the process alters the cellophone rather than simply removing the ink/dirt/whatever. I think with vintage single cards, anything you'd do to remove ink would in fact alter the paper underneath. With cellophane, or chromium cards with finger print smudges on them, you can definitely remove things without altering the cellophone/chrome/plastic underneath. Likewise people who "polish" chrome cards are certainly altering them because they are physically changing the surface of the card. If you're ready to say that everyone who has ever wiped fingerprints or dust specks off a card to be graded has altered that card, then I guess that's a position one could take. Just like I could make an argument that taking a card out of a sealed pack and exposing it to oxygen and nitrogen in my house is alteration. Then we'd both be insane. |

I don't take off the walmart stickers, remove writing or any price tags from my boxes I purchase as I feel it is altering.
Cardsin47: Hopefully when you sell this box one day, you will be honest with the buyer and disclose what you did. Is there any leftover impression from the pen marks on the plastic? Under bright light can you see any evidence of the writing on the plastic from the pen marks? and...........I'm BSing you! |

I really hope you guys are joking
If removing writing on a sealed box/case somehow means it is "altered" I'm happy to buy any altered boxes or cases y'all have to help alleviate your concerns. |

I was totally joking, though I must admit, lately I've been leaving old price stickers on my boxes for a little bit of history. It's kind of cool to see a $1k box with a $79.99 sticker on it. |

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion I guess. The OP did what 99% of the rest of us would do. This does not affect the product inside at all which is the collectible. The end collectible is the cards themselves, even if you collect sealed wax as a collectible someone down the line will open the product for the collectible item inside. That is why product dries up and why even vintage wax is being busted in present time. The person holding the sealed wax is just the middle man. All wax will be opened or destroyed (fire, flood etc.)
