Default Have I approached collecting all wrong?

A card I have been looking for was put on ebay yesterday. It is a jersey card #/20 that is a solid piece of jersey, no patch or multi-color. The seller has a price of $250 or best offer. I made an offer of $75, which i think is more than fair for the card, and it was auto-rejected. Even though it is a stretch to say it would sell on auction for $75, I offered $100 just to try to get it done. That to was auto-rejected. I then messaged the seller and told him that if the time came that he wanted to sell the card for a reasonable price, let me know, i was a buyer. He messaged me and asked what I thought a reasonable offer was and I told him I thought I had sent two offers that were more than reasonable and he never got them. I then mentioned that the base autographed card numbered less than his #/20 from the same set sold for less than $200 about two weeks ago in an auction and logic should tell you that the jersey card would come nowhere near that price. He responded to me that:

"To be honest with you this card is much more desirable than a Base auto those are a dime a dozen ask her self how many times you have seen a patch"

I have tried to accumulate autographs over the years, should I have been trying to get jersey cards instead? I have always just figured an autograph was more desirable than a jersey card. I wish autos were a dime a dozen, I am just confused now if I have been wasting my money buying these autographed cards when i should have been buying single color jersey cards

I don't think one overpriced eBay sellers message should change your perspective. Just my 2 cents.

Without knowing the card it’s hard to say if it’s overpriced or if you are a major lowballer. I would never offer 30% of what someone is asking and expect to get it. If fair market value is $75 then the person is delusional and therefore won’t under reason. In those cases I would just put it on my watchlist and wait to see if they drop price over time

You’re not. Some sellers are just trying to grift/squeeze people.

I know the “their card, their price crowd” will have something to say here but just because a seller values a card at a price doesn’t mean that logic supports it.

Call me naive, but I always believed people should collect what gives them enjoyment. I love getting nice patches. I realize they are not as valuable or in demand as autos, but that is what I enjoy so that is what I focus on.

I’d take a sticker auto over a generic napkin card the player never had contact with. And I hate stickers.

My strategy is to pay the highest prices possible on ebay, while selling cards on here for peanuts.

I answered this with some sarcasm because I think your post was intended that way

Anyone who starts a sentence, with "To be honest with you" is basically telling you that they are lying to you. Anything that starts with a preface to be honest with you or to tell you the truth will usually be followed by bull@#%@

Yeah it's been crazy. Went to the sports spectacular show in illijois this weekend knowing price would be crazy. It won't last, but it could be a bit. A lot of people pumping money into the hobby that seem to be ok losing a majority of it. When prices rise, but value doesn't it can't last.

Unless your collection features a heavy influence of Topps Finest, most likely yes.

OP: just wait the seller out because if the card is priced that high, it won't sell.

my advice: don't put it on your watch list because now the seller knows you want it and the price may remain firm

Definitely keep it off your Watch List.

Also- If you have any friends willing to do you a favor... every other week, ask somebody to message the seller with around a $60 offer

The value hierarchy seems to be:

1. Serial (low)
2. Shine (refractor/prizm)
3. Sig (watch out for stickers)
4. Stitch (watch out for "player worn")

Sure as heck sounds like a conversation I have had in the past with buyers who low-ball me on my cards. Although I don't recall starting the sentence To be honest with you. How does the saying go? Their cards, their prices...

Sounds like you really want the card so just buy it. In 2 yrs you won't remember what you paid anyway due to drugs or brain deterioration. Then one day after that you will be worm food.

Rik Smits jersey cards go for much more than his auto cards, because there are just not many of them. There are a handful of collectors, and the scarcity drives up value. Sometimes if you want something, you have to overpay. For me, I won't overpay. There is a Flawless jersey I want on COMC for $80, but my limit is $25. If I ever get to the point where I really want it, I will have to pay up. The seller has been slowly reducing the price, but I know my offer would insult them.

Hmm. Not enough info, as in I cant speak to the true card market price and if the /20 is significant even though a solid jersey. True I would imagine the auto is more desirable, but without details it's hard to say.

However I woudnt be surprised being auto-declined at less than half of asking price. If the seller is being irrational, well then he's irrational on it, it happens. But I dont blame a seller trying to get what he wants to get. Seller's dont generally like messages from buyers explaining what a card is worth, and they dont really have to explain why they are selling a card for $X. It sounds like you desire the card enough to want to pay more than what you think market price is, to the point of messaging the seller, so that does say something. Maybe others might desire this card just as much and make a strong offer, and the seller gets more money that way.

As others have said, I'd just wait it out if the seller is truly being irrational. Either they might lower price or another one might pop up.

To be honest with you, I dont think this is generally the case.

i had a similar situation, but the price wasn't anywhere what yours was.

i wanted a Trey Lance Out of this World insert card, the seller had it for $20 (fair price). he also had a Trey Lance Mosaic rookie card for $15...i offered $10, and was declined. i sent him an email telling him that i thought i was more than fair, and then recent sales of the card were at $7.50 for the card. i also mentioned that i was purchasing the OOTW insert, so i was hoping for the deal at $10.

he told me the same thing your seller said, "it's my card, it's my market" or some rubbish like that. i ended up buying the base Lance Mosaic rookie for $6....so yeah, forget hard headed sellers like that, waste of time.

and who knows, maybe in the end, he got his $15 for his rookie, but he didn't get it from me.
