Default Printing Grading Question

Have a couple specific grading questions but while I am posting would also like to get your thoughts on grade. I purchased this George Brett rookie in a eBay auction.

First question. Does the small circle in the bottom of the S affect the grade? It is a dot that was done in printing. If so, how bad does it impact the grade?

Second question. Where do I find information on card measurements to ensure the card is original spec size?

Finally, what are your overall thoughts on the grade?

Thanks for your help.

That defect is commonly called a "fisheye" and yes, it can impact the grade, especially an obvious looking one like that. I could see the card get a PSA 7 NM or so. If you go to PSA's website and look up the set in Cardfacts, they will have the measurement they expect. Otherwise, you could look it up in the Standard Catalog of Vintage Baseball Cards. Well worth buying a paper copy at Barnes & Noble to have on hand.

Thank you. I was trying to come up with what to call the defect. Lol

One more question for you. Just noticed on the back at the bottom under the word Topps there appears to be a small stain. Would this warrant the ST designator?

Unlikely. It looks more like just different fibers, but even if it is a stain, PSA claims to be highly reducing their giving of that qualifier.

Assuming this is not a "mini" version, wouldn't the spec size be 2.5x3.5inches? As for the stain, they don't give ST qualifiers anymore unless it is something really unique. It will just be taken into consideration with the overall grade. Figure the fisheye and stain will be counted as one defect together...

This isn't a helpful comment, but that is an awesome looking card

I"ve found that white corners will automatically drop the grade down to an 8. Then drop it again for the fisheye to a 7. And, it looks like the surface is dented a bit at the bottom corner of the R and on the right side. That and the stain on the back, I wouldn't be surprised to see this card get a 6.

With all that said... I tend to be pretty hard when pre-grading cards. So, 7 is possible.

Thank you. I bought at a pretty good price because it had poor pictures. I was pleasantly surprised when it came in.

Agree with the above and want to add that this is a "big" card that they seem to be tougher on. I would expect it to fall in the 5-6 range. There are some very nice PSA 6's on eBay right now that don't have the back staining issue.

Looks like a 7. Is the color faded? Has the upper left corner been dinged/bent? Really hard to tell, but from the front it looked OK, a bit soft at the tip, but I couldn't be sure it was flat. Zooming in on the same corner on the back, there appears to be a line diagonally near the tip...probably just the paper fibers, but wasnt sure it wasn't something more (like a bend).

Nice card.

Nice card.

Thanks for the input. No dings or lines. Just fibers.

Thank you. Can you give me some insight as to why you think that? Would appreciate it to help me learn.

Here is my PSA 6 for comparison. Provided a bigger image so you can compare. Your card has great centering and definitely worth grading. Personally, I am waiting for $15 grading for cards like this, but waiting is hard. I have 5 cards right now that are definitely worth grading at $30 each, but my will is strong!

Ha. Stay strong! Same here. I feel like it’s gotta come back down at some point. Definitely plan to grade this card but may be awhile. Thanks for sharing your card. Nice card!

Maybe its bad pics.... but, top edges look rough, the word Royals and the green above it looks bad, back of the card looks stained.
