Sad. Makes me wonder if Dave Grohl is just going to retire and call it quits. Cobain was one thing, But Taylor was like a brother to him and they have been best friends for over 20 years. To Dave I am sure he is irreplaceable. I would guess it is the end of Foo Fighters.

CBS reported that some preliminary toxicology came back and he had 10 drugs in his system including opioids and benzos. What a waste.

Bill Bruford was so good. His impeccable timing along with Chris Squire's jangly bass guitar on Heart of the Sunrise is jaw-dropping. Just his fills on the song are stuff of legend...

If you reply with...."last one on eBay sold for this"...then you should have bought it on eBay.

Slightly off-topic here: I recently read some stuff on Yes and how they put together Fragile and Close to the Edge, regarded by many as the best prog-rock album ever made. It is amazing how they put out 3 great albums: the Yes album, Fragile and Close to the Edge in less than 2 years.

I give big props to the guys that did it forever and put out huge discographies while showing ingenuity, remaining fresh and evolving their craft like Peart, Bonham, Hoglan, Lombardo, Hellhammer, Nicholas Barker, Portnoy, Mangini, too many more to mention.
Guessing not many of the old dudes on this board know anything about this, but props to you

On a mostly unrelated side note i have seen Nile many times, and while Kolias is amazing, his timing is generally a tad off live vs studio

Onlytime I saw Nile live was in 01 and it was one of the weirdest concerts ever. It was at the Showbox comedy club in Seattle in JULY and Cradle of Filth was the other act on the bill. So the venue was small/Hot and it was crammed with a bunch of Big goth girls holding roses for Dani Filth. When Nile started playing it was just a look of disgust on their faces.

Personally I loved Nile when they came out. Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka and Black Seeds of Vengeance were so unique/fresh. When listening to their later releases I felt like nothing really stood out/everything meshed together. So I have never checked anything out after Annihilation of the Wicked ad the solo album Karl Sanders did.

My personal fave is Ithyphallic, Annihilation is up there along with Those Whom the Gods Detest and Black Seeds.

After Gods Detest i feel their stuff lost its bite, havent loved much since then

1st time i saw them was at the Masquerade in Atlanta, 2005. King Diamond headlined, along with Nile, Behemoth and Black Dahlia Murder...one of the best shows i have ever been to as i had no idea who Nile or Behemoth were at the time....

All of you are wrong. We all know the best drummer is Nick Cannon in Drumline. The only person that might beat him is Tommy Lee because not only did he beat of a set of drums he also drummed on Pamela Anderson LOL

Whenever people talk about drummers, I always think of the joke about the Beatles.

So, a reporter asks John Lennon "Is Ringo the best drummer in the world?" and John replies "Ringo's not even the best drummer in the Beatles."

Alan White, drummer for Yes has passed away at 72. He was their drummer for the last 50 years. Before that, he was the drummer for George Harrison's album, "All Good Things Must Pass" including "My Sweet Lord" and John Lennon's album "Imagine", among other things. He was the drummer on last year"s Yes album.

Early in the White Stripes career Meg White was IMO the greatest drummer of all time to look at.

Off topic a bit but I see the Foo Fighters have scheduled a couple THawkins "Tribute" shows. Im assuming there will be multiple drummers filling in. Anyone come to mind as an obvious choice other than Dave taking over the kit and a varied cast of guest singer/guitarists? Im not a big FF fan but I do respect them and am curious what approach they will take on these?
Im not well schooled on current great drummers anyway so my mind drifted to maybe Chad Smith of RHCP and even Cindy Blackman, Santana's wife who injected a ton of chops and energy into Lenny Kravitz best stuff lol.

Stewart Copeland on drums would be a fantastic choice. Also would love to see 12 year old Nandi Bushell come in and do a song or two...

Danny Seraphine was a good drummer with "Chicago".

I don't know that I could put together a list of the best necessarily since it's so subjective and should be based on their play serving the music well far more than technical prowess. But if I listed the most influential on my playing...

Benny Benjamin
Uriel Jones
Pistol Allen
Patrick Wilson
Janet Weiss
Steven Adler (his departure from GNR affected the sound more than Izzy's departure)
Alex Van Halen
Charlie Watts
Ringo Starr (say what you want but he was the master of playing to serve the song)
Neil Peart (everyone has tried to play Spirit Of Radio, and most of us fail miserably)

Might not be the best to you, but I really like a Japanese drummer called Yoshiki, from the Japanese band X Japan.

Buddy Rich an easy answer.

I love metal so Lombardo, Hoglan… I always liked Tomas Asklund from Dawn.

Let’s not forget Chuck Biscuits.

I don't think that's a fair thing to say, Joey Jordison (rip) and Jay Weinberg were/are both very talented drummers. There are plenty of incredibly talented jazz drummers out there though I will say that.

On to the thread, there really isn't a best drummer, just favorites and comparing different genres to each other doesn't make a whole lot of sense as they demand different things from their drummers. So many talented drummers out there with their own flair and sound. I really enjoy Sean Reinert's drumming from the work he did with the group Death. For me it all boils down to the chemistry though, if they can make a great sounding song then they're cool in my book .
