Yeah, I am a die-hard Mets fan and I think that this discussion is a few years premature.

One of the reasons why he broke camp with the major league team in 2019 (as opposed to staying down in AAA for two weeks and gaining an extra year of service time, a la Kris Bryant) was because of his age. No matter what, he'd be hitting free agency at / near his decline phase.

And we often forget just how fast many sluggers age ("gradually, and then all at once."). I'm trying to think of an apt comparison, but I'll just use Roger Maris as an example. In Maris' age 25 & 26 season, the latter of which had his 61* HR season, he hit 100 HRs. You'd think he'd just be entering his prime, but... he just had 117 HR's the rest of his career.

He's been a more disciplined hitter this year laying off that high fastball. Seeing more pitches to put in play for someone who hits the ball hard almost every time can only mean good things which we are seeing so far this year.

That being said, he needs to average about 35 HR through his age 35 season without tanking his rate stats which will put him in the low 400s. He will then have to continue to age gracefully through about 38 or so to have a shot at 500. I'm not sure his build will hold up well into his late 30s.

If Fred McGriff ain’t in there, Pete Alonso ain’t in there FOR SURE.

Through age 27 (and Alonso isn't done with his age 27 season)

Delgado: 2,719 PAs, 149 HRs, 1 HR/18.2 PAs
McGriff: 2,959 PAs, 156 HRs, 1 HR/18.9 PAs

Alonso: 1,834 PAs, 124 HRs, 1 HR/14.8 PAs

He was hurt by the pandemic, but it's way to early to say he won't (or will) make the hall of fame. His numbers aren't that far off from Jim Thome at the same age, and they're better than David Ortiz at the same age. As a 1B/DH he can conceivably continue to bash for 10-12 seasons.

Yeah, good luck to him keeping pace.

That's the whole point. He can actually slow his pace as he declines and still end up with more home runs than McGriff or Delgado.

He needs to get to 500, otherwise no shot. On the one hand the Mets should be a good team going forward, but on the other hand they've shown with Cano that they're willing to cut you if you're no longer producing.

Re: Cano, basically every Mets fan hated him not just because he wasn't producing, but because of The Trade.* There were a bunch of factors outside of him struggling.

*that, oddly enough, because of Diaz's amazing season and Kelenic's struggles, it may look like the Mets have a shot at coming out on top.

Pete was drafted and developed by the Mets. I'd imagine they'd give him more rope before cutting him off.

*IF* he gets to 400 HR, and IF the Mets are able to do something like win a championship (or two) with him as a key player, I'd say he has a good chance.

If he gets to 450-500 hrs, then yes, eventually. Possible via VC

If he’s taking a family road trip to Cooperstown, maybe.

If the Mets win a couple of World Series with Pete on the team and he is contributing to those World Series and if Pete has a few monster years with 50+ home runs and can get to 450 dingers----He can get in without hitting 500 homeruns.

But a lot of IFs here...
He needs to make some all star games too, maybe win an NL League MVP in his career.

Plus hes only 27, its way too early to predict HOF for anyone only 27. too many chances for injuries.

needs to stay healthy for next 10-12 years and as mentioned previously average 30-35 home runs and keep his batting average over 260.

I see a lot of "If the Mets can win a WS or 2". IF that's what Pete/Collectors/Investors are banking on...good luck w/ that! We're talking about the Mets. Not their across town big brother.

Well, McGriff should be there. And he will be, soon, I predict.

The metropolitans occasionally #@#@#@#@#@#@#@#@ their way to the WS. it’s possible they could actually win one. It doesn’t hurt that cohen is still spending in the honeymoon phase.
