Aside from the discussion about who can detect if Star Company cards are Type 1 or Type II or have been counterfeited, PSA entering the grading of Star Company cards can only be a good thing for collectors of these basketball cards.
If people start to put together registry sets including these Star cards the demand will go way up and the supply is low relative to other basketball cards. |

Waiting for the inevitable internet arguments now on what Jordan's "true" second year card is, the 1985-86 #117 Star or the '87 Fleer.

I think it's good news overall for Hobby. The PSA pumpers will have a field day with the about-face that is about to happen. Star RC's for some of these player is great, and I'd like to get some, but still being pack pulled means something to me and those like minded. Star was not. (In references to Star vs. Fleer debate)

And would you look at that, just as this news came to light, Goldin happen to be auctioning both a BGS graded MJ (to cross?) and an uncut sheet.......

I've got a few BGS graded Jordan 101's that I'd love to cross over.. very curious to see how PSA graded ones sell in comparison to the Beckett ones. Right now, there is a huge price jump between BGS 8 and BGS 8.5 (about 50% more for the extra half grade bump).. I have to assume both of these (BGS 8 & BGS 8.5) would become PSA 8's, so it will be interesting to see if that sort of premium holds or if there won't be such a huge gap going forward.

I guarantee they will grade other years eventually. Maybe every 10 years or so they will provide their graders with enough training to accurately determine authenticity. 1985-86 Star Co PSA grading by 2032!

Great news for the hobby. Once I read Nat's interview in BCF, it was clear as day this would eventually happen:
Quoting from Nat's interview with @thereal27guy (Basketball Card Fanatic Magazine, March 2021): 27guy: "If you could only choose to collect LeBron, Jordan, or Kobe, - the three guys you've posted the most recently - if you had to choose to collect one of them, which would it be?" Nat: "Jordan." [before question was even finished] 27guy: "Ironically, I know you have a PSA 10 (of the Fleer #57 Jordan), but I don't know that it's the most important card to you. I don't want to put words in your mouth though. Can you talk about what that card means to you and what you think of it?" Nat: "I probably have a somewhat controversial opinion on that card. I have a BGS 9.5 that is .5 away from being a 10 - it has two 10's and two 9.5's - and I have a PSA 10, and that's because I'm doing the 1986 Fleer set in PSA 10 - I have like 20 cards left. But to be blunt, it's not actually Michael Jordan's rookie card. He'd been playing in the league for two years before that, so his rookie card is in fact the Star card from '84-'85, which is a beautiful card, the red bordered one." I'll be crossing mine as soon as I can.

But for a good look at MJ's face? Nuh-uh. The #117 for that, or even the 86F. Would be a shame if MJ had no early card with a pic better than the #101, yes? |

I have several big questions like, will PSA (rightly) deduct for the many centering issues, most of which BGS let slide? Not just left /right, which are easy to see, but even top to bottom is flawed. A consistent standard for top/bottom centering was never followed by the TGPs.
Another is, how will they treat the poorly cut and mis-sized cards, some of which may be the result of sheet cuts in recent years sold by the Schonco / Higbee connection. As it is, I've never seen a Jordan #195 or Jordan #288 from the 84-85 set that deserved even a grade of 8 due to centering on the front or miscut on the back. Never. Apart from authenticity, which I believe can firmly be determined, their are numerous grading challenges. I believe all Type II's should be rejected, along with the Jordan 10-card set, the Magic Set, and the "Best of" sets.

Really curious to see how the PSA 8 would do at auction compared to how the BGS 8.5's have been selling. An 8.5 just went for $36k, an 8 sold before that for $22k. Guessing the PSA 8 is worth somewhere in the middle.

Say you have a BGS 8. What's the lowest grade you'd accept from PSA in order to cross it?

)From what I've seen, a 8.5 from either BGS or SGC (I haven't bothered with the other grading companies) typically sells for a bit more than a PSA 8. (generically speaking, not this card per se) |
