Default Looked at new cars today. UGH. How long will the shortage last?

Live in Madison Wisconsin for perspective.

Yesterday went to 4 different dealerships.
Nisson
Kia
Honda
Ford

Think I saw 5-6 New cars. Maybe 100 total used. EVERY used car was priced higher than when it was new. All were from 2018 to now, all low mileage.

Today went to a different Nisson dealership. Had 12 new cars. Everyone of them $6,000 OVER invoice. I want a small Versa, $30,000 after tax title license and other fee's.

So I'm asking somebody in the new car business.

Do you think this is the "new normal"??
Or that these Versa will go back to the suggested retail price.
And if so, WHEN?

THANKS.

Heard about 2 more years from my sales guy. I was thinking about trading in a car I had on a lease but I just bought it out. Terrible time to be acquiring a car.

None of the prices today are sustainable.

Anyone touting things as the "new normal" is hoping to sucker in a desperate buyer. Hold out as long as you can.

Order the new car. Usually pre orders are at MSRP.

If you can wait.

Dealership was going to give me $18k for a 2018 Camry with 24k miles on it, in full knowledge that the vehicle was in a near head-on collision with a tractor-trailer in January 2022 that resulted in over $10k in body/mechanical repairs (all paid by the tractor-trailer driver's insurance). I was tempted to take the $18k, pay off the car, and put the balance toward something new, but I owe less than $12k on the car since I bought the lease in 2021, so I decided to hang onto it - car runs fine - it did take the body shop three different times to get all the electronics fixed properly.

Of course, after that was all done, that car got rear-ended by another driver and now there are two license-plate screw holes in the rear bumper (planning to get that repaired - couldn't claim it on insurance as it would have put a second accident on the title).

I've got a 2000 Tahoe with only 150k on the odometer that I bought six years ago for $7,000. Runs beautifully. It gets me from Point A to Point B just fine whenever I need to go somewhere beyond biking range.

I do not envy people who have to buy a vehicle right now.

There isn't an end in sight. I have over about 200 deposits pending for vehicles yet to be made.

No need to sucker anyone, there are far more buyers than cars. Anyone who thinks this is all a ruse to sucker someone is out of touch.

You're describing the immediate conditions.

Do you really think this is the "new normal"?

We ordered one.

Just hope it gets here in enough time that I don’t have to reapply for a loan and my rate is 10%

Only if the dealer says it's going by sticker price. Very in demand cars, if they can even be ordered, may still be marked up. Nothing stops the dealer from marking up the vehicle when it finally arrives because your deposit isn't a contract.

I recently bought a new car. I didn’t pay over sticker, paid cash and it was the easiest car buying I’ve ever done only because I knew I couldn’t haggle. There’s just no negotiation right now.

ugh....so basically, I should take my minivan to the shop again, rather than even think about getting a new or used car.

2008 Honda Odyssey 150k miles on it, having problems with the sliding doors, A/C and most recently, car needing to be jumped after driving the day before.

Had to jump it 3 times in 2 weeks..nothing seems to be left on or anything

I got a car back in January, traded in a 2019 Trax for almost what I paid for it in 2019. I knew the dealership was getting in the car I wanted, so I told them to call when it arrived. They backed it off the truck, pulled it up front, I told them to start the paperwork while I drove it some, then I bought it. It was the only 2022 Camaro V8 they were getting in so I knew I had to act fast.

But the car and housing markets now are screwed up.

Some dealers stopped taking '22 Sienna orders months ago so getting a minivan from anyone this year will be tough without markups. You may have better luck with a full size SUV. GM has been building Yukons with a 2-3 month turnaround but minus some chips (dealer is supposed to retrofit).

My girlfriend just bought a new Jeep Wrangler. I believe she paid MSRP for it and it actually was made much faster than they anticipated. 4-5 months sooner.

Nothing will change until the supply chain is recovered. The supply chain won’t recover until China quits their asinine “zero Covid” policy.

make sure you look into the nissan CVTs some last 20k some last 50k But it is a very expensive repair. You dont want a car with 39k miles on it that needs a 9K repair.

I ordered my wife a Blazer about 2 months ago and they gave us a 3-4 month estimate. My car is starting to die now so really want to get this in so I don't have to buy something else too. Can't even get a hold of the sales guy to get an update...

Bunch of nonsense.

did I just read a versa was/is 30k? might as well get a couple of year old lower end tesla for that and you will get much more out of it than a versa. no versa is ever worth 30k

I work for Ford (the manufacturer -not a dealership - 2 totally different businesses).
You're not in the market for a truck or SUV. You're in the market for a fuel efficient car. Dealers, no matter the brand, are taking advantage of the higher gas prices and holding to sticker price or even upselling them.

Dealerships buy the cars, with authorization from the manufacturer, to sell at least MSRP. Dealerships buy cars on credit, two ways: either through manufacturer credit or bank credit. The cars bought through manufacturer credit have stipulations with them. Cars bought with bank credit are released from stipulations from the manufacturers, therefore, the dealership can sell it for whatever they want.

Used cars are bought in bulk at auctions so dealerships can charge whatever for them.

More and more chips are coming in to the USA from Taiwan. Each manufacturer is in the same boat. We all get out parts from the same suppliers. Lear seating supplies seats to all brands, they have chips in their seats. The seats is programmed to (Ford in my case) manufacturers specification. Within the next year, we should see a USA chip maker come online but they wont be able to meet demand. The chip makers just dont make chips for automobiles.

Were there any exceptions for the Bronco preorders? I read that Ford stepped in after a dealer marked up one guy's vehicle who complained about it on forums.

We’re fortunate to have a couple dealerships within a 3 hour drive where you can special order wranglers and gladiators at 5-8% under invoice. Yes invoice not msrp. We special ordered my wife’s Sahara, msrp a little over 53k and paid 46k. Brother in law is about to pull the trigger on a gladiator.

Dealers and manuf are making money hand over fist. At this point it's a man made chip shortage. They could easily have enough chips and cars made but that means prices come down. So they will on purpose keep the chip shortage going for years until it's common place that cars are this high and people won't ever see affordable cars again.

You honestly see carmakers removing features so they have to retrofit them later or pulling the plug months ago on some MY22 orders as a price manipulation scheme?

Either you're joking or you haven't been car shopping lately.
