Default How will the Bobby remember Jacob DeGrom?

***hobby

He’s a really interesting case. Career 2.50 ERA, 42.4 career WAR, ~1,500 strikeouts, 2x Cy Young winner but also sub 100 wins, late start (26 years old), 34 years old, and starting to get the injury bug. Incredibly dominant pitcher of his era but will be, more likely than not, lacking the compiling stats. How will he be remembered by the hobby? Maybe I’m the only one that feels this way but I view him as a different version of Tim Lincecum. Tim had age on his side and was incredibly dominant and then fizzled out fast, DeGrom is also dominant currently but age is against him. Thoughts?

The second best opener after Kershaw.

What are the thoughts on a Koufax comparison?? Probably a stretch.

He's in the same ballpark as guys like Gooden, Lincecum, Johan Santana, etc......guys who were dominant for a very short period of time, but otherwise had fairly short careers.

Bobby doesn’t care - he’s getting paid $1.19 million from the Mets every year no matter what he thinks of degrom!

Is his career coming to a close already? Because that’s what this sounds like to me. If Verlander could do what he’s currently doing after coming back from injury at the ripe old age of 39, then DeGrom would surely still have a chance to put at least a few more quality seasons together as well. But assuming his career ended today, he’d probably be viewed as favorably as someone like Dwight Gooden from a hobby standpoint.

Just like David Wright; a Mets legend.

Why is everyone talking like he just announced his retirement?

Also, King of the Hill is one of the greatest shows of all time.

Not everyone can do what Verlander’s doing… that’s much more rare than it is common. I’m not saying his career is over but he’s also not 27 years old.

Only hitting 102 mph in his first start back, sad to see a promising career drop off like this.

He’s 34. Verlander and Scherzer have shown it’s still possible to be dominant into your late 30s these days. I think he finishes with one more cy young and goes down as perhaps the pitcher with the best stuff of all time

good luck to anyone playing the mets in a 7 game series if a healthy deGrom can go 1-4-7.

Agree, and also keep in mind hes 34 but was a short stop until his senior year in college so has logged way less innings and wear then other stud pitchers heading into his mid 30s. But as I've said in other threads he already has establised himself as having the best stuff of all time, thats not up for debate

Exactly this, although most like Santana.

Starters aren't allowed to pitch on three days rest any more, so you'll never see anyone start games 1/4/7 of a series again.

Closest we've seen in the past twenty years was MadBum starting games 1 and 5 in the 2014 World Series and also pitching five innings of relief in game 7 for a total of 19 innings.

Curt Schilling was the last pitcher to starts games 1/4/7 of a postseason series, when he pitched 21 1/3 innings in the 2001 World Series.

Jack Morris started games 1/4/7 of the 1991 World Series and pitched 23 innings.

The 1986 World Series was the last in which pitchers on both teams started three games (Ron Darling & Bruce Hurst).

Sure it is.....I doubt anybody can even agree on the definition of what "best stuff" even means?

I'm sure that plenty of people would argue that guys like Koufax, Maddux, and Randy Johnson had better stuff than any active pitcher, even though today's pitchers throw harder.
