I am thinking about investing in an auto feed scanner and was wondering what types/brands you all use? I am looking at the canon imageformula r40, but would love to hear other suggestions. Would also love to hear from anyone currently using a canon imageformula r40. Thanks

Don't these auto feeders ding and scratch cards?

Fujitsu 7030. Game changer for my eBay Store. I've scanned over 10,000 cards. No scratches or damages. Remember...many cards go through rollers at the printer. Cards go through rollers in transit by USPS.
My interview with Don Caruso with Fujitsu addresses many questions about these scanners. https://youtu.be/iI7g47R4MMw

I was going for the Fujitsu mentioned above but one of my hustles requires a flatbed so just run 3, all different brands due to driver issues - I've noticed the Epson is a little nicer/clearer than the other 2 (Canon & some off brand that kind of sucks)

Is there a way to use them and have space showing around the card's borders? Leaving them in penny sleeves, perhaps?

I've seen a few times people mention that the penny sleeves get crumpled up when you run them through. The concern I have, is running Chrome/Prizm cards through the scanner without a penny sleeve will leave marks/scratches of some kind.
I'm definitely tempted to try this out - it could be a big boost for the scanning of lower end stuff and it seems like toploaded stuff.

Not showing full picture of the card would be an issue for me.

From the small amount of research I've done so far, it seems most will let you set a border of your desired amount around the card so edges and corners stand out.

I found a cheap one of these to try out. It scans really well - you cannot do penny sleeved or top loaded cards. It is also not a great idea to use it with Chrome finish cards as we've seen scratches/roller marks on our tests. So, really it works best for scanning base and low end inserts - we'll be using it for low end vintage as well.

You threw me off when you said a cheap one. Did you buy it used, or did you find it new and on sale somewhere?

It was advertised as open box but I'm not thinking that's true. Looking closely, it appears to have been used a fair bit and the seller is blaming his sister for it.

I will answer myself by saying that I bought one and it is awesome. What a time saver. If I'm nitpicking, only having a white background makes some of the newer cards hard to see. If there is a way to change the background color that I am missing, someone please enlighten me.

Have you had any issues with surface damage on cards being scanned? Considering getting one of these. |

Just Goggled “canon imageformula r40” and ended up on the official Canon site. The first 3 reviews from recent months show problems with the Twain Driver.

I've only scanned a few hundred cards so far, but so far no damage.

@nam812 and/or swipe79
Since it appears you're both using the R40 for a little while, could you instruct me how to set borders? Upon unboxing and scanning my first few cards, it's cropping it right against the edges and I'd like to widen it out if possible. Was there ever any answer on changing background color? Thank you for any guidance! |

I haven't noticed any scratches yet, but the newest cards I've scanned are from the early '90s. It's been mostly older base so far.
I'll keep a watch out for scratching. Quote:

It's all good, I'm hoping it is just my scanner that has a slight defect. Not enough for me to return it, as it has great practical uses outside of card collecting.

Here is an example, the scratch is easy to pick up on the scan, but not so much when looking at the card without tilting it in light. Does anyone else have this issue with an R40? I just got this printer a few weeks ago. **after a closer look under good lighting on all cards, it appears they actually have 4-5 consistent scratches on these absolute cards. I tried some older 1990ish basketball cards and they survived unscathed. Perhaps it's only glossy picture cards that get scratched. Regardless, I'm done scanning cards with it, unless a solution to fix arises. This guys seems to have a scanner and a solution to this problem: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7fvqTtR3_k

For anyone using the canon imageformula r40, have you noticed a jagged edge on your scans that is not on the card? It happens to me a lot, and here is what I mean by jagged edge:
