Default 1949 Bowman Doby 8.5 RE auction- a questionable history

I am interested in thoughts on a card coming up for auction in the Robert Edwards Auction tonight. I don't plan on bidding, but I would be interested in people's thoughts on this card due to its history. As a newb, seems very suspect and probably points to how PWCC cards move through the system.

6/16/2020, card sells on Ebay through PWCC for $3,605

6/11/2021, card sells on Memory Lane for $15,351.60. No description whatsoever

8/15/22, card selling on Robert Edwards Auctions with extensive descriptions:
"There are tiny surface flaws on the top and right edges noted for accuracy." "centering slightly to the left"

The left and right edges have a rough cut while the top and bottom have a smooth cut. Just doesn't look right. Not familiar with the set as far as cuts go but they are a target for the trimmers.

Very interesting. Also, why are old holders more suspect than newer ones? Can they be opened and resealed why newer ones can't?

There is usually "frosting" when holders are opened. Not sure how they are put back together without frosting being visible.
As far as older holders being suspect, security is more advanced as time goes by.

I think people believe that the PSA has become more strict on grading over the past few years, so the older holders could be “softer” grades.

With the amount of graders there I would think consistency would be impossible. Perfect example of "buy the card and not the holder".

What's with all the strange little white spots? Did someone try to bleach out some dark spots on the front of the card?

This is why I go after grades 2 to 5's for cards like this. Once these grades get 7 and higher, there is more incentive to doctor for the multiplied prices for these higher grades. Those do look very unnatural.

Is there anything that can cause these things on vintage and pre war cards due to age and paper stock? I'm talking natural issues caused by time.

Well, you can have slightly lighter spots due to imperfections in the card stock but I don't think I've ever seen anything like that on the 1949 Doby before. It doesn't look natural.

I think some work has also been done to the top two corners and the bottom edge of the card may have been trimmed.
