Exactly what causes it. Essentially fWAR says, that double that careened off the wall? That’s not the pitcher’s fault, that’s on his defense. Pitcher throws a pitch that induced a much needed ground ball resulting in a double play? He had nothing to do with that. That was his amazing defense.

Gausman has been great this year as he hasn’t given up many HR, hasn’t walked very many batters, and he’s struck out a ton of hitters. But he’s also given up a lot of hits.
