I am beyond baffled as to why Garoppolo would accept such a deal.

He was going to be a backup no matter where he went this year as all 32 teams have committed to a starter. Why not stay where you already know the playbook. His best chance to play this year is most likely where he’s at. He can move to a better situation in the off-season if he’s not traded by the deadline.

What was his other option, get cut and sign a similar deal with the Seahawks who are going to be a dumpster fire? I don't think it's a bad idea for Jimmy to wait a year and see what his options are next year or see if a QB injury happens.

Wrong

Starter in Cleveland immediately

Not that I’m saying that’s a good or bad idea

But your post is simply not the case

Don’t tell me starter for 11 and backup for 6

He's always been such a team player. Whether beneficial to him or not. Plus if he was cut there's no guarantee what he would make.

Yeah they must think Lance needs another year. He’s going to be looking over his shoulder now. Pressure added. Weird move

No way he's backing up Geno Smith.

No way. There are several teams where he would be the best QB on the squad if he went there. NY comes to mind. As does Cleveland (for the first 2/3rds of the season). Atlanta. Detroit. Seattle. All places where he has a better chance to start than San Francisco.

And there is no such thing as being "committed to a starter" when someone better comes along.

I don’t hate it as much as others. They think they have a super bowl team and they have a qb that will run. Covering their butt, just like the Bills did when they paid Mitch a bunch of money to back up last year.
They also saw their (not fully starting) o line against the Texans, which I also would want a good backup after seeing. Who better to have than someone that knows the offense. I think it’s a win win.

I'm sure the 49ers were incentivized to keep Garoppolo away from team meetings and the playbook in case he was traded/cut. I'm just going by what his teammates have said of him. I don't know first hand that he ghosted the 9ers, only by what Silver reports.

That was a pretty brutal showing by the O-line. Not as bad as the NFC Championship game, but pretty bad. Luckily it was preseason. I think this was a no brainer for the 49ers to keep him at that price.

So Jimmy has a no trade clause so they don’t dump him to the Browns. Smart

It also keeps the Niners from releasing him and the Division rival Seahawks grabbing him. There are vultures out there. But yeah, keep the eye on the prize.

I can see a lot of GM's playing for a high draft pick now. Cleveland and Seattle are likely a wash

That's true, but it's not like the Seahawks are any good. If the Niners waited until the last possible second to release him, how quickly would he even be able to start for Seattle anyway?

I can't imagine it would have taken him too long to pass Geno Smith. I think this is a good move for both 49ers and Jimmy, my Nate Sudfeld stocks don't like it though.

If he can't handle the pressure of Jimmy G looking over his shoulder then I can't imagine he'd be able to handle the pressure of defenses coming at him. I think it's a little overblown

I understand why it happened this way, but it kind of sucks this didn't happen much earlier, allowing the Niners to best use the savings from JG's reduced contract. In-season salary cap space seems pretty worthless compared to space during free agency.
I also don't see this as JG being a team player. At this point in time he was not getting a better deal anywhere. Earlier in the offseason, sure (and even that was complicated by his surgery and possibly the Niners trade demands), but not now.
I'm not sure the negative impact to Trey is necessarily related to confidence, but it sure seems like there could be some locker room messiness. Some of the Niners have been very loyal to JG. If Trey struggles, are some in the locker room going to grumble?

There's no market for Jimmy out there currently. The no franshise qb teams either got a streamer qb already or are looking to tank this year and draft a qb next year.
