I know yellow label CGC are probably preferred in the comic community but the collection I bought a while ago(and just now going through it a lot better) has a lot of signed comics in it. I am finally thinking about getting some autographed comics authenticated and encased by BAS(Beckett). I am currently sending in some magazines and I can add some comics for roughly $20/comic. I would only be getting the autographs authenticated on these.
Are any of these worth getting slabbed? 100 Bullets #50 Signed by Brian Azzarello Gothem Central #6-10 signed by Michael Lark JSA #52 Signed by Geoff Johns, Don Kramer, and Carlos Pacheco Avengers Disassembled #500(#85) signed by Brian Michael Bendis and David Finch Wolverine #1-3 Signed by Greg Rucka Mystique #1 and 4 signed by Brian K Vaughan Impulse #1 signed my Mark Waid Exiles #8, 9, and 10 signed by Judd Winick Powers #1, 7 and 20 signed by Brian Michael Bendis Outsiders #1 and 2 signed by Judd Winick Astonishing X-Men #1 signed by Joss Whedon and John Cassaday Ultimate X-Men #50 signed by Brian K Vaughan Origins Inner Child Part 2 of 6 signed by Paul Jenkins, Richard Isanove, and Joe Quesada Ultimate Marvel Team Up #9 signed by Jim Mahfood and Brian Michael Bendis Stupid Comics #1 signed by Jim Mahfood Green Arrow #83 signed by Chuck Dixon Intimates #1 signed by Joe Casey, Giuseppe Camuncoli, and Arian Hughes Firestorm #1 signed by Dan Jolley Bloodhound #1 signed by Dan Jolley |

Unless it’s CGC Signature Series, autographs usually just hurt the value of a comic. It’s just like taking a sharpie and squiggly lines on it. None of those comics are particularly valuable, unfortunately, but could have some interest to collectors. After the Beckett fees, and the selling fees, there won’t be too much left for you though.

I would send them to CBCS, not Beckett (although Beckett owns CBCS). Then at least they are graded with a yellow label if they're deemed authentic.

Yes, good recommendation. There’s some great comics there, even if they’re not valuable. I LOVED Geoff Johns’ JSA run, and Powers is all-time favorite of mine.

I would disagree slightly with the "signed books add/don't add value", sure some signatures would, others may not, and it also can depend on the comic signed too. CGC would only Signature Series yellow label them if they witnessed them being signed, which leaves CBCS as the only option but you have to pay CBCS to verify the signatures and that can add up, last time I checked it was $25 for the first signature on a book, $15 on additional but that may have changed. Also, condition of the book is quite important, so I would start there with the condition and pressing can help with condition to a certain extent. Check eBay as one example to see what similar books have sold that you have and by the same creators if any such examples exist. Weigh out the costs versus what they are fetching for and it may not be worth your time, unless you aren't planning on selling them and just want to preserve for various reasons.

That said, looking over the list I don't see any worth slabbing. You'll end up spending way more than they're worth.

Thanks for everyone’s input. I know the value is not very high on these but I still think they are pretty cool. Going the CBCS route would get a little too expensive for some of these so I’m just going to send a few to Beckett to get them encapsulated and the auto authenticated for around $20.
Thanks again!! Ryan |

Sending an autographed book to Beckett could help increase the value a bit, but it depends who whose sig we’re talking about. It might not boost the value enough to make the effort worth it. |

Just what status does the hobby have for Signed Edition books? Are they worth it or is the signature the selling point? My wife is a fan of JLH I don't see any value as all her autos look to be going down. Would sending them off to beckett help to hold any value?

No, I don’t think it would help, but that’s just my opinion. Beckett is not really something comic collectors are looking to.
As far as Signed Edition books, I’m not totally sure what you mean. You mean just a signed comic book? Or something specific? |

By signed edition books do you mean comics or are you talking about actual books like hardback books? |

Now if an artist or author is selling the books directly, they usually can command a premium. For instance I paid a bit extra for a copy of MODOK Head Games that was signed by Patton Oswalt (writer on that series and for the MODOK TV show), but I bought it from the store he signed it at. The problem with signed comics on the resale market is that if they're signed by anyone with value (like Stan Lee), it is assumed that they're probably or at least potentially forged if they aren't in a CGC or CBCS slab.

Most of those signers sign for free, like most comic artists/writers, especially if you buy your books from their booths. Joss Whedon might be an exception.
I wouldn't bother getting the Kevin Smith authenticated. He signs so much, I think it's rarer to find his books unsigned, LOL. He signed for free for a couple decades, but recently he's started adding a premium for his autograph on his website on a lot of items. I have a ton of Kevin Smith signed comics that I ordered from him directly, never paying more than cover price and often paying less than cover price due to clearance sales. I was sad when after years of buying signed toys from his website for retail price, he started charging $100-150 for signed Funko Pops and an upcharge for other toys. He also charges $20 for signed comics now instead of cover price. Not sure if he just tired on signing, didn't want people selling his signed stuff for a profit, or wanted more profit. |

All I know about this book is its a signed book with signed edition printed on it with JLH autograph. Its from The Music Box series from IDW Comics in 2009. Like I said I think the only real value would be as a cut autograph.

Out of the 5 comics I decided to send in, Kevin Smith was the one that cost the most to get authenticated. I sent them off in October and should be getting my results in a couple of weeks. I know having Beckett authenticate them doesn’t up the value much but I wanted to be sure they were authentic before I sold any other signed comics. I was 99% sure they were all authentic due to the notes of different comic cons and times people were signing that was found in this collection that I bought.
Thanks for the comments! Ryan Quote:
