And, as has already been mentioned, prices are kind of silly. They do seem to be coming down but not enough for me to go full tilt.
I feel like there should be a distinction between supercollecting everything from the player's active years and supercollecting everything including stuff put out years later in overproduced sticker dumps.

Something like:

Super-collecting = Everything from a player's active years

Legend-collecting = Everything. Absolutely everything. Even cards put out 20 years after the player's death.

I like that! I do, in fact, still actively hunt the old stuff. I will get after ANYTHING that I am missing prior to 2018 and would consider my collection fully complete if I happen to ever obtain all of those items. Anything after 2017 is considered bonus material in my mind. I feel no real sense of obligation to treat those items as anything other than targets of opportunity.

I'm a team collector these days Patriots, Red Sox and Celtics. I'll collect any card of those teams regardless of player. I also like inexpensive cards so when I'm buying singles I'll take the nicest cards I can get cheap regardless of player. Sure I'd love a bunch of nice Brady cards but if I can get a nice on card auto from a premium set for $10 of a player that nobody cares about I'll take that over a Brady base card for the same price. I definitely try to collect players that I was a fan of and in football that's a lot easier since people only care about QBs. I can get great Pats defensive players who were starters for a couple of seasons 10 years ago really cheap and if it's a really nice looking card I'll gladly take that. So I wouldn't say I collect bad players specifically but I definitely collect a lot of players with zero hobby value

Its crazy how many sets Alstott is in now. I used to have a pretty sizable Alstott collection, maybe 500-600 different cards, so I try to still keep track of his stuff now and then. Its like every set that Panini drops has an auto of his.

Everyone loves white running backs. But Alstott was very good and really fun to watch.

Man, collecting Champ feels like it got way harder after his retirement and HOF induction. 2019 Prizm alone had 50 different variations. I feel less inclined to go after everything now, but only certain cards that intrigue me or the old stuff during his playing days.

All of the parallels in sets now just makes it daunting and overwhelming.

I'd say most of it is the fact he is the last of an extinct breed, the fullback. The 90's was full of awesome ones between Rathman, Floyd, Hoge, Moose, LoNeal and Richardson.....today there are guys like Juszczyk but he doesn't have that old school intimidation factor. I think Kuhn may have been the last fullback that had that x-factor. Only Derrick Henry has that x-factor now but he's considered a RB.

He is, and will always be my favorite player and he's the reason I'm a Bucs fan.

Not sure on the title of super collector as my focus is only on rookie year (2005) cards of Charlie Frye. Still buying as I am a hoarder for those as well even though he had a super short career. Card counts in my sig are a bit outdated but is proof of my denial that he was a bust.

I "Super Team Collect" the Raiders. I Don't have a ton compared to some but I'm just over 30,000 unique Raiders cards. But since opening our card shop 8 months I have around 5k that I still need to go through. Customers give me Raiders cards almost everyday. I guess we don't have to many Raiders fans in Wisconsin!

I think of Alstott as a FB in name only. He was a runner/pass catcher more than a primary blocking FB. It would be like calling Lagarratee Blount a FB. If he wasn’t white I don’t think he would be as popular as he was/is. Today we have CMC who is probably the most collectible and popular RB. CMC is great no doubt but he’s never been the clear #1 RB in the NFL. Not taking anything away from either because they are both great.

There was a fella back in the day who used to heavily compete with me for Alstott. Tragically his house burned down and he lost a huge majority of his collection. He ended up selling me the high-end stuff that made it. About 10-12 of the cards had smoke damage (staining) on the edges but I didn't care as they were impossible cards to find and the smoke stains didn't make them any less rare.

I remember reading an newspaper article back in the late 90's in which defensive players were asked who they least like having to tackle. Alstott was the majority response. You might get him to the ground but you were going to work for it.

When he was playing for the Bucs and based on what I saw when he played at Alabama, I super collected OJ Howard thinking he was going to be the next Gronk. As a result of my stupidity I still own three shields, 5 other 1/1's, NT's, Flawless, Select Gold, Gold Prizms, Gold optics, the whole kit and kaboodle. Thinking about it makes my tummy hurt.

Boy was I way off on that one.

I made him my high 1st round pick in my dynasty fantasy league that year.

I super collect/legend collect Sean Taylor and Brian Orakpo.

Both were star defensive players in college and 1st rounders drafted by my pathetic Skins.

Orakpo had a decent career but it was derailed by numerous injuries.

We all know the story of Sean Taylor.

I have over 90% of non 1/1s of both guys.

Panini started releasing Taylor cards again in 2019 Select and several sets in 2021 including Prizm. I go after every card I don’t have but the market for him is still strong as many others go after his stuff. Not the case for Orakpo but it is difficult to find cards of his I need at this point.

Super collecting takes a lot of dedication, patience, and money. But I have a lot of respect for others that do it since I know what it’s like.

I think back to 2019 and the whole country seemed to be on the CMC #1 train. Both from a media perspective and card prices were absolutely absurdly high for base prizm.

But then came injuries and Derrick Henry took over the #1 spot. Still, CMC isn't close behind and carrying the 9ers and Mr. Irrelevant to the super bowl would send McCaffrey back into national superstar status.

I'm really enjoying this thread, guys. I fully realize my thing is virtually devoid of value, but I want to restart my 90s Chargers collection, particularly guys like Humphries, Means, Seau, Martin, etc. I'm old enough to remember 80s Air Coryell and have always loved that time. Lately, however, it's surprised me how much nostalgia I have for those 90s teams. Plus I like the cards of the 90s way better than the 80s stuff.

I am trying to get every card that has been made of:

Lionel Manuel

It's not like it's super hard for me to get them all, it's just that they are so inexpensive, I don't see the sense in spending the S&H they ask for on Ebay, so, unless it's something harder to find, I just wait until I can get to a show to go through commons lol

The following here wouldn't fall under "super collector" but I am trying to get every autographed card made (aside from 1/1 autos, those are just a bonus of I can get them) of:

Stepfan Taylor
Chris Brown
Leonard Pope
Damian Nash
Geno Smith (I know I will never get them all, even w/o the 1/1's, but I have followed him since his days at WVU).

I'm about a third of the way with Taylor, 75% of the way with Brown, Nash, maybe 25% of the way, Pope, maybe 20% and a very small % of Smith, maybe 10%

Thanks for the thread!

That’s awesome. Do you just collect raw cards or is there a focus within the Raiders?

I'll throw my collection in here. I'm missing 3 non 1/1's from having every non 1/1 of Bruce Carter. I've never seen them or the SP Authentic Auto 1/1
