My wife and I go back n forth about who the greatest MJ was. I say Jordan and she says Jackson. But she did say one thing that made me steer a little more towards Jackson in the end... and that's because MUSIC > SPORTS.

I don’t know the answer, but clearly the best place to get an unbiased response to this question is on a basketball card forum. Actually I do know the answer - it’s Michael Jackson and it’s not even close.

Keep in mind that any discerning musical fan would place Quincy Jones way above MJ. Might even argue that it is the production that made the music.
It's kind of like the Ja hype train failing to materialize in wins without Bane in support. Wonder how many titles the Bulls would have won without a key defensive piece, such as Rodman. |

I picked the same, but maybe that's because I'm a basketball fan and so were my friends.
I probably should've pick the other MJ as music reaches a lot more people that basketball. |

The question was in regards to at their peaks and worldwide, so I think it's easy to say it was Michael Jackson. If the question was who is more famous now or in 10 years, I believe it's M. Jordan. Jordan is still very much relevant because of shoes, sports cards, GOAT debates, etc. whereas Jackson isn't referenced as much nowadays.

Michael Jackson is one of the top 75 (or so) artists all time in Spotify streams, and has 34+ million "monthly listeners," which is also right around that top 75 level.
That's just one streaming service. And it's also worth noting that it's a streaming service that was founded after he was done releasing new music (aside from a few posthumous releases). At their peaks, it was Michael Jackson. Today, it's still Michael Jackson. In 10 years, it will still be Michael Jackson. In 50 years, it will still be Michael Jackson. If you asked Michael Jordan, he would tell you it is, was and will be Michael Jackson. |

Something called the Q score might be what you are looking for. Been around for decades, and measures a celebrity's "appeal".
They measure a person's "familiarity" score to get the Q score. The familiarity score might be as close as you can get to an objective measurement of "fame" (but "best" doesn't necessarily mean good). In the end, peak Tiger Woods may have been more famous than peak Michael Jordan, but neither of those guys would come close to Michael Jackson. |

Type "MJ" into Google. Zero science behind it and doing that means nothing...but go see who Google thinks MJ is.

Fame is but a fleeting whatever. Musicians will be studying Quincy Jones stuff well after MJ is a little blip in pop history. I don't even mean the slick 80s Thriller stuff. Early 70s soundtracks are a rich vein.
Of course he is no Miles or Coltrane. Last edited by Nomad; 01-31-2023 at 01:46 AM. |

The top International sensation pop stars fame trumps the top USA Athletes- even if it is Internationally known Jordan.

Michael Jackson. No one will ever have fame like Michael Jackson again. No one. The world is a different place.

Pop Culture figures are way more worldwide known than sports stars. Especially as time goes by. And you are talking one of the most famous pop stars of all time. Just look through old sports cards, most people have never heard of any of them besides the hall of fame caliber players. We still remember pop culture figures from decades ago. Their movies and music live on in time and are loved worldwide rather than mostly just USA for sports stars.

If you posted this question on an 80's pop music forum, it would be a landslide.

Yep. How many people, even teenagers today can tell you Frank Sinatra's name, can sing pieces of his songs, etc? How many people can name sports greats from the 40s and 50s who aren't interested in sports history? People who live and breathe sports have delusions about the impact sports have on those who aren't really into them. Michael Jordan is probably about the ceiling for what an athlete can achieve but 50 years from now people are still going to be listening to Michael Jackson in some isolated village in Armenia.
