Default Did the Sports Card Radio Brothers sell out (dip)?

I've noticed lately they've suddenly shifted their approach and content to be more like generic hobby influencers. They've been talking a lot about flipping low-end cards on their videos -- frankly, it's obnoxious. They've been pumping Comc a lot, promoting it as a place to buy and sell low-end cards. They've even been pumping Goldin Marketplace a lot after trashing Kenny non-stop for months.

It seems like once they built up a lot of viewers from their "grift slaying" in 2022, the SCR brothers are now trying to cash in and directly compete with Geoff Wilson (aka Sports Card Investor) for hobby clout.

Normally it wouldn't be bad to be a run-of-the-mill influencer -- it's certainly better than being a predator influencer that we've seen crop up in the hobby since the pandemic bubble. But these guys were supposed to be the hobby gate keepers. They would criticize and attack nearly anyone in the hobby for corrupt behavior -- it was both amusing and beneficial to hobbyists.

The SCR brothers were hot for a minute. They were the anti-establishment. They were controversial and provocative. You either loved them or hated them -- most shady people don't like scrutiny, and this hobby is full of shady behavior. Now it seems they've sold out -- what do you guys or gals think?

Scientific fact.

They didn't sell out. If they do NOT capitalize and make money off they followers, then I would think they are being foolish. We do live in Merica. I appreciate that they call out people. I actually learn alot from watching their podcasts.

2-3 years ago, when they were the ones talking about staying in high end hotels/rentals in Cali and their watch collections and what they just bought - at that time I would have agreed with you. They have matured and I appreciate that about these guys.

They are straightforward and tell you what they think, show you what they bid on, what they buy, what they like and dislike and you have the opportunity to respond in open dialogue. Not many of us have the cojones to do what they do. I have never met them, never written them, don't know them, simply replying to what the OP asked.

That sounds good to me -- the more gatekeepers, the better. An ethical hobby is a healthy, sustainable hobby. No way you can grow the hobby long term if hobbyists are regularly getting scammed.

I don't mind the low end flip. If people are going to invest, do it low key (if novices) and not like Geoff.

I have no probs with it

I've noticed the same thing. Why would they suddenly be promoting and buying on Goldin after Ken Goldin called them jackoffs and their beef with him? Something is off.

I’m sure attorneys have something to do with it.

To me it feels like they have run out of stories / scandals to follow. In order to maintain an audience you need content, hence the sports card selling journey videos.

They were live a few days ago talking sh*t like normal.

It’s weird when people NEED a gate keeper. Make your own decisions.

Haven't listened to them in years but for a long time before the boom they always talked about their small COMC buys and flips. So that's nothing new.

People should try to make informed decisions, though.

I probably should have described them as hobby watchdogs. Although they do like to critique others in the hobby.

I don’t dislike the SCR guys but they aren’t exactly an unbiased news source either.

I think people regularly ask them to investigate stuff and they decline. They obviously aren't a regular news operation with a staff full of reporters who do the leg work to build stories. They're a small-time operation that functions more like a gossip column. They get into feuds with certain individuals and the resulting drama and humor is a lot of their content.

You mean because they have personal feuds with the people they report on?

I think that's pretty common with the media. The difference is the SCR brothers don't pretend otherwise -- they openly relish the feuds.

From anonymous sources and constantly shilled auctions?

Every video not is just crap content with video clips of people they don’t like. It’s actually sad to see 40 year old men acting like that. I’d expect these kinds of videos from people in high school, not adults Ken and Jeff and Mojo are a lock to be clipped in every single video these days

Do we hear ourselves? Hobby Gate keepers, Influencers, Pump and Dump... I miss the days when I had to lie about going to card shows and hide my boxes when people came over. Remember when cards weren't cool. all the people that were waiting for the hobby to grow and talking about how great it would be if cards became popular well here you go now enjoy the corruption in the hobby. The hobby you used to love is now destroyed.

What? There's always been corruption in the hobby.

There’s been massive corruption in every hobby for a long time. Watch “The PEZ Outlaw” and “Murder Among the Mormons” on NetFlix. Both are about people who forged collectibles going back to the 70’s/80’s.

Hey, I'm just a collector who enjoyed watching SCR's YouTube videos -- there's no reason I'd be jealous of them.

It's just strange they've suddenly changed their content and approach to promoting flipping. I get that they used to dabble in that stuff, but now it's a main part of their content. They've become full time influencers, which is a shame for followers like me who thought of them as hobby provocateurs.

There's a lot of truth to what you're saying. But I also think they had a nice niche market for their content. Their viewers enjoyed their juvenile content -- it was a refreshing escape from the hobby positivity that nearly every other hobby content creator was putting out.
