Completely agree. 97-98 usually gets most of the glory because of tougher parallels becoming the standard across nearly every release, but from a design standpoint thanks to the inserts (and even base cards) 96-97 was THE turning point for basketball cards. I guess it’s important to note that tougher inserts became the standard across most releases as well.

You don’t even need to mention the rookie class for any of this to be true.
