Default Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez Appreciation Thread

Isn’t he great? He busted the guts out of ball and later outran the great “beast”. It’s about time he gets his dues.

So fast, he can kill someone and then bring them back to life.

Just shows how tough the majors are. Dude was a legit 5 tool beast as a kid and in the majors was pretty much just a pinch running role player.

Who can possibly forget that time the Dodgers brought him in as a pinch runner and he stole home to win the game in a walkoff? I guess it's true that heroes get remembered, but legends never die!

This is definitely the prospect card to get. I have one in my collection.

I think he was just older when the last scene played. I think he was pretty good in his younger years. He had just lost his top tool and it relegated him to that role.

Agreed. Smalls wasn’t THAT much younger than him. Maybe three years at most. When Smalls was announcing, he was no spring chicken. It’s safe to say Rodriguez had a strong career and is going into the HOF.

As a teen I volunteered with stroke patients (mostly grunt work but I got to also play board games with them). One way or another the conversation led to The Sandlot and one of the patient's visitors matter of factly told another visitor, "Oh that's the movie about Jet Rodriguez as a kid." I was highly impressionable/gullible. This was pre-Google.

I spent too many years thinking this film was at bare minimum an amped up biopic with a heavy dose of artistic liberties. The narrated monologue by Smalls at the end did not help dissuade me from this notion.

Sure, Benny deserves his due. But he wasn’t even the best prospect from the Sandlot.

Agreed. She looks down and me and smiles from her tower every time I walk past the pool.

I hope this isn’t against the rules, but I’m looking to complete the 2018 Topps Archives Sandlot set. I have an extra Michael “Squints” Palledorous FT. I’m LF Timmy, Tommy, Scotty, Ham, Hercules, or Benny. Lmk if anyone is up for a trade! Thanks guys!

Honestly, I meant to start this thread on April fools but got busy. Little did I know there were sandlot cards available. These are kinda cool. Definitely a flashback from my childhood.

Also, it’s crazy how many of us love this movie. I was once at a bar and the bartender was flipping channels and left it on a the Sandlot. All of us guys at the bar were quoting the movie along with the cast. When Wendy Peffercorn showed up we all looked at each and nodded “oh yea, Wendy Peffercorn. Hmm hmm hmm”

There's another "Sandlot" set beside the Topps one. It was issued with a DVD/BluRay Combo pack of the movie about 10 years ago, maybe a little less.

The Sandlot was the perfect little movie with the perfect cast. In that way it reminds me of The Karate Kid.
I was 20 when it released. I can imagine for someone 10 years younger it’s appeal is even stronger.
Because it’s so beloved I won’t be surprised if a remake is attempted in the next few years to cash in on the nostalgia factor of its core base. I hope not tbh but that’s how Hollywood (t)rolls. When looking up the release year I saw there was a Sandlot 2 made back in 05-ha, never saw it.
I fall right between the Bad News Bears generation and the Sandlot generation. Although I think both were fantastic I prefer BNB. The tone was a little darker and I adore Matthau but both were defining baseball movies for their time.
We could use another one.
