Default Help with Corbin Carroll collection

I’m asking here because I know will get some good advice (and some hate ones lol) from the folks in here that are way smarter than me.
I’ll try to keep it as short as I can so j don’t write a book lol.
Here’s my story I’m 55 y.o who basically collected prospects . I have a decent size collection made up of Pre 2022 cards. I haven’t really bought any since the call up . The majority is 2019 1st paper, Chrome, Refractors .the rest are some nice cards with autos etc.. I’m not a rich man but at todays prices worth about $11000.
I was recently diagnosed with heart failure stage 2. I’m familiar with it as I remember my Grandfather having it and succumbing to it but each Is different. I already had a double bypass in 2013 but at that Point it was just artery related but heart was ok. I can feel that disease is progressing and the Doc thinks I should be alive in 5 years by he also said that it’s serious and could be less.
I have 2 young adult children (18 and 21) and figure I should sell all myself sooner then later.
So here is the question (without any heart problem basing it on)
What do you guys think I should do. Should h sell at end of season or wait until spring training. I have other cards too but I feel better doing it within next 8 months for peace of mind knowing I am able to leave them something and not task them with having to sell as sadly neither are in to the hobby.
Sorry for writing too much but k truly appreciate you guys taking time to read it. I’m just trying to figure out at what point ( with no off field problems ) do you think I would make out the best. I believe it would be stupid right now and truly believe he will bounce back ( he couldn’t really play any worse in last 1.5 month lol) . I’m not in a rush rush but would like to sell all my cards within 8 months or so and just trying to get advice as best part of his season I should sell as you all know that’s type of thing than I’ll ever know.Thank you guys Jim

Hello! Sorry to hear about your health conditions. Hoping for the best for you and your family. High cholesterol runs in my family, and I’ve already been on medication for it for years now. Hopefully that keep serious issues at bay for as long as possible.

I’m definitely not the selling expert here, but I would strongly advise to wait until spring of ‘24 to sell any Corbin Carroll cards. People will have forgotten about his sluggish end to ‘23 by that time, and the hype machine will be at full throttle. He’ll be getting some potential MVP buzz and people will be itching to buy his cards every time he has a big spring training game.

Good luck either way!

Hey Jim. So sorry to hear this wishing you all the best and hope you find a way to outlast the expectations!

As far as the cards I'm guessing the ROY pricing has been baked into his prices already as he was expected to win ROY for a while now. Being that the team has fallen way off and may not make the post season I would definitely wait until the spring. That's when the hype will be stronger and prices typically go up. I'm guessing he may be battling an injury as well that is contributing to his drop-off. That's my two cents. Good luck and I hope things go well for you. Feel free to reach out anytime.. stay well my friend!! I'll me keeping you in my thoughts and prayers!!

So sorry to hear about this, at the same time good on you for looking down the road and worrying about the people around you.

You probably know how much of a believer I am in Carroll. I think his numbers have been extremely sapped the last few months by a bit of bad luck here and there. This may always be the case with him but he is one of very few players that have a chance to be THE face of baseball and I think you should find a way to play it both long and short.

I think selling some now to enjoy life a little more is a great idea. At the same time, keeping some would also give you (or them) the ultimate upside benefit and memories at the same time.

When in doubt, sell now and enjoy your life. You can keep whatever few cards you personally enjoy the most, especially if they aren't the most expensive ones. More to life than cardboard (well...usually, at least.)

I say sell now, you never know what could happen sadly in your own life or Corbin's, an injury or no joking something as crazy as a Wander situation could easily derail card prices and in my opinion maybe you take the risk with a $50K collection and lost $10 but in 2023 $11K isn't a ton of money so I personally wouldn't want to risk it dipping under $10K if it's for their future. Health aside, the money may be moved on by spring training to the next best thing, I mean I didn't hear much about Julio or Witt in the leadup to this season it was guys like Adley, Elly etc same will happen, it's good to sell right before season but it's usually Bowman guys like Holliday, Chourio etc

If you are 100% set on selling it all I'd split the difference and sell half now and half in Spring of 2024. Odds are his prices are going to be higher around Spring Training but its not a certainty.

I would definitely sell most now and cash in. You don’t want to risk injury or other miscellaneous things to the player/sports cards. You are safer putting the money into a 6 month cd account and earning your 4-5%. You have already made a profit, secure it by cashing most of it out before the season is almost over and no one cares about baseball anymore. With the nfl season starting around the corner, time is of the essence.

Very sorry to hear this. Hopefully with modern medicine your doctor can maintain it and you can live for a number of years. My grandma had this and she lived for about 20 years with us and didn’t pass away until she was almost 80–so you never know!

My advice….sell all now or at least by the end of the season as he gets closer to ROY, but hold back maybe the 5-10 best/highest value cards you have until Spring as those are the cards that will fluctuate the most with performance and hype.

You might want to list them on here in the buy/sell/trade section as there are quite a few members that buy his stuff……might be able to cash out quick without the trouble and hassle of listing auctions, fees, non payers etc

First of all sorry to hear about your health issues, my grandmother had congestive heart failure for almost 30 years and did what she could to exercise and eat right. Take care of yourself first and foremost so you can be around for your famiy!

I'm of the opinion that any profit in sports cards is worth selling out for. So many prospects and investments people make don't "hit" and the fact that you have been sitting on a lot of Corbin Carroll cards for years means you didn't pay today's prices for them.

I sold my Nate Pearson Bowman Chrome auto collection after he rose in the ranks of pitching prospects. I didn't hold til he got the callup. I left some money on the table.

But now look at Nate Pearson. Injuries and command issues and he's a bullpen arm.

So while this may not be Carroll's peak and he may even win an MVP one day, one thing you can be sure of is that you can cash out right now and let someone else carry that risk of an injury or slump or falloff.

I'd send it all in to a consignment shop on ebay and let them sort it, list it, sell it.

If you have a card that's really high-end or sentimental to you, hold onto that one.

I liquidate the prospects I buy and typically keep one nice one in case they go on to superstardom. I do not hold a player's cards beyond their first year or two in MLB. All of the price hikes are baked in by then unless they go on to be superstars, and very few players do. It's just the way the hobby is now, it's all speculation.

Cash out and focus on you!
