Nice, clean design. Chrome will look great.

Hopefully there are new auto subjects like Velasco, which can help differentiate this from Chrome.

So Topps Pearl is now reduced to a Chrome insert called Pearlers?

Maybe Topps is taking the Panini Chronicles approach since they won’t ever do an MLS Pearl product. If anything, Fanatics will probably want to create more brands in the future, not reduce offerings.

Regardless I’m all for new MLS designs and inserts.

Edit: Cardboard Connection and BO are both saying 1 auto and 2 mems while the sell sheet says 3 auto/mem. I've stayed away from previous paper MLS because you get way too many napkin jerseys and the auto checklist is usually both sparse but also hard to hit but if this is true (plus better parallels for autos), I might be busting a bunch more.

Interesting. I am seeing both the original 7/26 release date and some sites with a 8/30 date, which would probably be enough to accommodate Messi.

I usually just buy a couple of boxes/blaster on discount to put together the base set but maybe I'll try a preordered case.

So it seems it has been delayed again. Is this common?

Probably desperately trying to squeeze Messi, Alba and Busquets in to save this from the bargain bin a few weeks after release like usual.

Sorry I’m more of a newbie soccer collector with my son being his sport of choice to play. Quick question on Messi, will any cards of his for this year be considered MLS rookie cards for him? Or is the big draw just having a card of his in a Miami jersey?

There will be a premium for the first Messi MLS cards. And that initial premium could be pretty huge but they won't be rookie cards.

But given print runs and the eventual Chrome and Finest options (plus other possible sets) for 2023 and beyond, that premium will fade but still hold somewhat over time.

When David Beckham came to MLS, the first MLS Upper Deck release with his cards had a ton of interest, even though he already had plenty of base cards and some relic and autos in ManU and England uniforms.

What else would they be? lol, obviously they are his MLS rookies as it will be his first MLS cards lol it obv won't have the "RC" on it as that would be the equivalent of Trevor Bauer being a "rookie" in Japan or guys in the Big 3 in basketball having a RC symbol after being in the NBA for years.

Is the first MLS Upper Deck release with his cards still an important set for Beckham?

Depends I guess. In the grand scheme of things, not really. If you are US-centric and a big fan of the MLS, then sure.

MLS cards will always be outliers because collectors in the US will pay a premium for US players, and MLS / USMNT.

I mean, Messi in an Miami top for me personally is worthless (19th year card, minor league), but it's going to be bonanza time for MLS fans and flippers.

It’s important in the relative sense. Any card that has consistently and easily been purchasable for a couple bucks for basically the entirety of its existence can’t be iconic (versus a Griffey Upper Deck rookie which will still set you back a good chunk of cash today).

But it’s definitely an important card for US/MLS soccer fans and one that I reckon many US soccer/MLS collectors own.

It's not that obvious. I mean Topps put a RC on all the baseball cards when they came over from Japan. I would not be surprised if Messi gets a RC to help sell cards

Baseball is different - there is a legal definition of what is able to be stamped by Topps as "RC" in baseball.

They're not going to stamp 18th year Messi cards with an RC badge, especially when they've been putting out Topps branded Messi cards under the UEFA license for 6-7 years.

This hobby is so bent and dodgy and preys on the gullible, I wouldn't be shocked if they tried it.

Topps have the 'lost rookies' set for example which is completely ludicrous. If they thought they could get away with it, they would totally do it.

They thankfully wouldn't though.

18th year rookie cards

Topps used the RC logo for the first MLS cards of Gerrard, Lampard, Kaka, Villa, Zlatan and Rooney. Imagine they will use it for Messi too. None of the other cards have held any value based upon the use of the RC logo or the fact that they were the first MLS cards for those guys. Any value the Messi has will be unique to the fact that it is Messi.

I’m a Messi guy and an MLS guy, this card will hold no special interest to me.

Lol I remember those!

I suspect they won't for Messi since recent 'vets' who are new to MLS and haven't had previous cards like Gadi Kinda, Adam Buksa, and Gaston Gimenez would be appropriate to receive an RC logo but instead only assigned logos to- young prospects, including ones who have had previous cards, like Talles Magno.

My god, they did too. That's hilarious.

They'd not get away with it now.

That was before topps/fanatics spent all that money on the uefa license. Look at Pepi he didnt get a rc logo in his first bundasliga card when he transferred,he also didnt get rc logo for his first topps now champions league card.

It's been 4.5 years since the last of those cards was released (Rooney in March of 2019). Things have changed significantly in the soccer hobby since then. They don't RC badge guys like that anymore. No RC badge for Chicharito or Nani in 2020, Matuidi or Higuain in 2021, Douglas Costa in 2022, etc. Won't happen.
