Default Dick Butkus has died

https://1150wima.iheart.com/content/...-at-80-report/Just in it appears he suddenly died today. I know he was 80 but for 80 he seemed rather feisty the few times I have seen public appearances in recent times.

Sad news for NFL fans and Bears fans in particular. He was regarded as the greatest defender in NFL history pre passing rules changes in 78.

I made the big decision and removed the exclamation point, hoping it will keep the thoughts about the legend as the point of the thread.

Because of my age he is still the LB of legend when I was growing up. The guy all LBs followed in the footsteps of. RIP.

RIP.

Of the Bears linebacking greats, he's the most legendary.

It just reminded me of the Seinfeld episode. I know it wasn’t intentional

Back on topic this is such a sad thing

Butkus was awesome on Hang Time

That’s not a joke. That’s how many of us were introduced and watched his insane highlights

It says Butkus still got his weekly picks out on Instagram for week 5.

He’s going with Washington over Da Bears

RIP to the legend. Too young to ever see him live, but you can't beat beating on the all decade team for the 60's and 70's. My Butkus contribution:

One of the linebackers that I idolized growing up. He was how I wanted to intimidate people. Rest in peace to the legend!

He was one of the truly feared players of all time ... watching old clips of him and seeing just how much he loved to play line-backer ... Loved his nicknames ... The Animal, The Enforcer, The Maestro of Mayhem or The Robot of Destruction ... Rest in Peace Dick

He played before my time but I’ve studied him and he is legendary. He should probably ranked higher on all time defender lists but those lists tend to have too much recency bias. I own a couple of his autographs and hope to eventually own his rookie card. Here’s to a legend.

I loved my guy Mad Dog Mike Curtis of the Colts(who died a few years ago at 77), even he would admit Butkus was the best.

A small group of mid 1990s teenagers were first introduced to Dick Butkus (and maybe only know of him) as Coach Mike Katowinski

I got these signed through the mail years ago. They were a giveaway at a Bears vs Packers game in 1994 (Bears got killed, it rained a monsoon) for Butkus and Sayers jersey retirement. I wasn't able to go but my brother was. Rest In Peace Dick Butkus.

When Dick Butkus discovered what was Twitter a couple years ago it was amazing. The back and forth and witty banter he had with randoms was hilarious. Seemed like a cool guy with a good sense of humor.
