The NFL isn't perfect, but it's better than the other American pro sports. A lot of people here down on the NFL are down on it because their teams aren't so good or they're just fantasy/gambler types. Baseball, hockey, soccer, and basketball just don't equate.

The NFL is only so popular because of Americans thirst for violence.

Basketball >>>>>>>> NFL. It may never take over popularity in America but globally there’s no contest.

I used to watch more college football than NFL since my teams are OSU and Browns. As a kid and really until recently, I would watch the first few weeks of NFL and keep up enough for fantasy football. Once the Browns were 1-4 or whatever then I wouldn't really watch any until the playoffs. I would never miss an OSU game from high school until COVID happened.

Stopped watching NFL after all the politics got involved and stopped fantasy. Just got back into fantasy and besides Browns/Panthers games (wife's team), I will watch games if I have a guy playing in it. Also helps that I have a daughter under 1 y/o so we really can't do much with her nap schedule on the weekend. For OSU I will mainly watch the bigger games vs the cupcake ones.

Basketball may be more popular as a sport internationally but I think basketball is waning in terms of popularity quickly, at least in the U.S. And I think the stars outshine the game itself, which means it is vulnerable. It's becoming like baseball.

As an American I do love myself some violence. I thirst for it. I NEED it.

But maybe a more nuanced answer is that there are only a few bonafide stars in the NBA (aging ones at that) and MLB, there is no competitive balance between teams, teams that do make the finals not buoyed by major markets/teams aren't exciting (or get ratings, largely), too many games so the stakes are low.

Denver v. Miami Finals? Who cares?
Texas v Arizona World Series? Nope.

I'm not watching the Orioles in a random game but I will watch the Ravens. That's pretty common.

The Dodgers lose three in a row doesn't make a headline. The Niners three in a row could derail a season. That's exciting.

I actually agree with you that the number of games and specifically game times play a big factor. It’s a lot easier to tune into an NFL game on Sunday than some random baseball game on a Tuesday night.

Baseball is just very boring and does a terrible job of marketing its star players.

I also think I agree about the NBA in terms of waning star power. Bron, Steph, KD, etc these guys are going to be out of the league in the next 5 years or so and who’s gonna take their place?

Jokic isn’t marketable. Luka cries way too much and it’s super marketable. Outside of that, could any casual person on the street name a single NBA star not named LeBron or Steph?

I haven't lost interest altogether, but it definitely has diminished a lot. Having a family changed things, for sure. I just don't have the time to dedicate to football without sacrificing more important aspects of life. Additionally, my perception of the game has changed. I don't think there's much left in terms of integrity, especially in the NFL. The league can't even decide what constitutes a penalty or a catch. After 100 years you'd think it would be pretty clear. I just stopped caring as much.

When the Lions stunk forever I watched every game. Loved Barry and Megatron. Now they’re a much better team and I am totally disinterested. I think for me it just has to do with the guys you originally associated with bejng the faces of the team, and their respective departures. The Lions team now is not the Lions team/teams I grew up watching so it’s just not as interesting to me.

Loved the NFL as a kid. Even followed box scores in the newspaper. Haven't watched 30 seconds of any NFL game since all the that stupid crap started happening a few years back. Do I miss it? Not even a little bit! Wasn't sure it was still on.

Still watch a ton of CFB though.

Die hard Denver Broncos fan born/raised in Denver.

This season I’ve watched the least amount of football ever in my life. My team being absolute trash the past however many years it’s been I’m sure has a lot to do with it. It’s only so many times I want to spend 3 hours watching my team get its butt kicked

I watch much more NBA

The product this year is weaker. The games have had way too many penalties and stoppages and injuries.

I've missed almost every one of the 6:30 am euro games except for the second half of a few.

The three frontrunners for MVP are Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, and Jalen Hurts. I'd say Mahomes is exciting to watch and Lamar can be, but just don't enjoy watching Hurts.

Herbert and Allen have struggled. Hell even Burrow has. Purdy is in a rookie slump.

I have not lost interest watching but I no longer go out of my way to do so. This is especially true on nice afternoons during the early part of the season. I'd rather be outside. I find the late season and playoffs more captivating and this is the way when it's -20F outside without the windchill.

Dude, I get it, when it hits 67 degrees here in December, way too cold to be out.

Yes… when I moved to FL and it was nice outside.. I’d rather be on the boat or golf course on Sundays.

I don’t know about this “Americans have a thirst for violence” narrative.

In Brazil they behead, draw and quartered a referee in a beer league soccer game after the ref stabs and kills a player on the field.

You do realize that favela violence (and the underlying causes of it) is not the same as getting jacked up to watch dudes with battering rams on their heads give each other brain damage, right?

I’ve watched more NFL this year than the past few.

Now we’re getting somewhere.

Americans have a thirst for violence is a boring narrative. I’ll leave it at that this morning.

The human populace has craved physical contact sporting since forever.

Competition and dominance among our species is embedded into the fabric of our dna.

That's also why we all like the best sports cards. We have unique ways of showing off our status symbols, and sports on tv is the grandest display of them all.

Bring back the spectacle hunts of warrior-kings having to slay wild beasts in order to maintain the right to rule.

I mean, I thought it was pretty obvious hyperbole. Maybe not

I only watch my team play....rarely watch any games that don't involve my team, mainly because there are too many stoppages in play/commercials, etc.

So when my team is lousy, I hardly watch any football at all....

Once the Steelers won a Super Bowl, I stopped caring as much. Same thing in the NHL with the Penguins. It's kind of like beating a video game. You spent so many hours on it and when the credits roll, it's like, "Ok, what do I do now?"

Now if I can just get the Pirates to win a World Series, that would be great, but at least I still have something to root for.......for quite a long time. A long, long, long time.

This is 100% me,but unfortunately my team is the Panthers and our owner has done plenty to destroy my enthusiasm. As for other games, I watch occasionally for fantasy purposes (mostly as background noise) but I've gotten less enjoyment out of that in recent years.

And college football, I generally watch my team (NC State) and occasionally other ACC teams, but I have little to no interest in watching other teams or really keep up with CFP & its associated rankings. I imagine my interest here may dwindle to zero if my team falls on the wrong side of realignment and players who break out continually get snapped up by the top tier teams with more NIL resources. We already have our starting QB deciding to redshirt ROS even though he went 3-1 the last 4 games.

I used to scream at the television without even gambling on the game. Then I used to scream at the television only because I was gambling on the game. Now, I don't scream at the television any longer.

As an old man, the game has changed so much that I no longer find it entertaining. The offensive explosion combined with the sissifying of the game ie moving the kickoff up, no touching of the qb allowed, no hitting anyone in a mean way, defenses not allowed to touch receivers at all etc

The game that sealed it for me was the Chiefs vs. the Rams where it ended up being like 66 to 62. Just a joke.
