Picked these up over the weekend. They appear to be some sort of printing plate made of thin plastic from the NY Daily News sports artist Bill Gallo. I held them up to light to get a better picture. They are essentially stencils. Does anyone know the technical use of these?

They're likely film negatives used to make printing plates.
Today, most printing plants get the plates with the pages already on them, so negs are no longer used. |

Definitely negatives to make printing plates. If you invert the image in photoshop it looks correct. (This is based off your photo.)

Wow, looks great inverted!! Safe to assume these would be the only ones made for each sketch?

Probably only one saved by whomever grabbed them but could be more than one made.

Not familiar with that process of imaging/developing.....?
Here's some current [black] plates from "normal", offset printing application that's common in the newspaper industry. These are from this year's NBA Draft/Wemby Night. They store/save a lot better than regular newspaper! And they're pretty cool/unique pieces to get autographed, too! ![]() ![]()

Possibly, the NYDN prints multiple editions so if a page was updated, they'd had to print a new negative to make a new plate, but usually pages like that were probably intended for early copy.

I'm aware of the concept of newspapers.

Ah yes, newspapers. This is how in olden times we learned about the happenings from far off places, and find out which people who recently died. Simpler times for sure.
